The Blues and Gryphons have established a competitive rivalry in the last three seasons, starting with a last-minute Gryphons field goal for the 15-13 win in 2010. U of T rebounded with a thrilling 21-12 victory on home turf in 2011 and will be out for revenge after last season's narrow 31-29 road loss in Guelph.

Toronto (1-2) is coming off a 34-10 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday, while the Gryphons (2-0) will be well-rested after a bye in Week 3. They previously defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks and Windsor Lancers in Week 1 and 2.

Second-year quarterback Chris Jugovic of Hamilton, Ont., will need to lead the squad through the OUA's No. 1 ranked defence this week. Jugovic currently ranks fifth in the province, averaging 273 yards per game.

Veteran targets Alex Pierzchalski and Paul de Pass rank among the top 10 receivers in the OUA, averaging 74 and 84 yards per game, respectively.

Cambridge, Ont., native Dylan Gordon leads Toronto's defensive corps and currently sits third in the OUA with 19.5 tackles, while third-year defensive back Trevor Harvey has 18.5 tackles so far this season.

Leading the top-rated defence is Gryphon John Rush. He has amassed 15.5 tackles over two games, while linebacker  Curtis Newton has totalled 11 tackles, one sack and one interception so far this season.

Offensively, Gryphons QB Jazz Lindsay is averaging 156 yards per game, while Johnny Augustine has led the 2012 Yates Cup finalists on the ground, with 78 rushing yards per game.

The Mustangs will take to TD Stadium on Saturday, September 14, for their second home game of the season when they face off against the Ottawa Gee-Gees in week four of OUA action.

After cruising through the first two games of the season against Toronto (50-14) and Carleton (71-4) the Mustangs faced their toughest task of the season this past Saturday against McMaster and proved they were for real, defeating the defending Yates Cup champions 58-15. Second-year receiver George Johnson broke out for the Mustangs with a 224-yard performance, highlighted by 42-yard and 79-yard touchdown receptions.

Ottawa was unable to put up a similar result against McMaster in their home opener on August 25, falling to the Marauders 51-24 to open the 2013 season. Despite the slow start to the season, the Gee-Gees enter Saturday's game with a solid 2-1 record after defeating Waterloo 44-32 in week two and Toronto 34-10 in week three, meaning that both teams will enter Saturday's game on a winning streak.

The Gee-Gees entered the 2013 season with 18 returning starters from their 2012 team, highlighted by OUA all-stars Brendan Gillanders and Ettore Lattanzio at running back and defensive end, respectively. Gillanders rushed for 768 yards on 123 opportunities and recorded the ninth highest touchdown total in the league last season with nine while Lattanzio registered 8 sacks.

Will Finch has been a big reason for the Mustangs' rise since opening day as the second-year quarterback has compiled 1,164 yards and thrown 10 touchdown passes while rushing for another two TDs. The Burlington native leads the CIS in completion percentage hitting 75.8% (75-for-99) of his passes with only one interception. Aaron Colborn guides the Gee-Gees offence and so far this season the fifth-year quarterback has put up similar numbers to Finch, throwing for 1,310 yards and ten touchdowns on 96-139 passing along with two rushing TDs. With two of the OUA's top pivots going head-to-head expect both teams to focus on the passing game to try and come out with the win on Saturday.

Finch isn't the only reason for the Mustangs' offensive performance this season, as running back Garret Sanvido and receivers Brian Marshall and Johnson have all been on fire to start the season. Sanvido is second in the CIS in rushing with 291 yards, including running for 88 yards and scoring one touchdown in the Mustangs victory over McMaster last weekend. Marshall and Johnson both caught seven passes against McMaster, running for 160 yards and 98, respectively. Johnson sits alone at the top of the CIS with 489 receiving yards while Marshall is sixth with 327 on the season.

Last week's matchup against McMaster proved that the Mustangs are going to be a force to be reckoned with this season and the team will look to add to their perfect record when they face-off against Ottawa. The Gee-Gees will be looking to continue their streak as well and avenge their loss against McMaster with a victory against one of the two teams that have been able to beat them.

CALGARY – For the eighth time KICKOFF takes over McMahon Stadium this weekend as the 2-0 University of Calgary Dinos football team hosts the similarly 2-0 University of Saskatchewan Huskies in a top-10 battle for first place early in the 2013 Canada West season.

KICKOFF is always the highlight of the home schedule for the Dinos, and this year's edition is shaping up to be the best ever with the Calgary Stampeders on board to provide a full CFL in-game experience. The tailgate starts at 3 p.m. in the east parking lot of McMahon, with kickoff set for just after 5 p.m.

GAME NOTES (.pdf)

After three weeks on the road the team is more than ready to take the field at McMahon Stadium, a place that has been extremely kind to them over their five-year stretch as conference champions. Dating back to the end of the 2007 season, the Dinos have won 21 of their last 22 regular season contests and 10 of 11 playoff games – 31 wins in 33 games overall.

That one regular season loss, however, came in the team's home opener of 2010 against the Saskatchewan Huskies – a team that should present the Dinos with their toughest test of the young season. Both the Dinos and Huskies have eked out their two wins on the season, all by a touchdown or less in a conference that seems to be as wide-open as ever this season.

It has also been tough going for home teams in the conference to this point in the campaign, with the visiting team taking wins in four of the six Canada West games played so far – and the Dinos accounting for two of those.

Dinos-Huskies games are always intense and this should be no different as Calgary looks to get some breathing room atop the standings while Saskatchewan aims to reassert the dominance it held so long in Canada West – and avenge a 45-4 loss in the teams' only meeting last season. Calgary and Saskatchewan will meet up once more this year in a Friday night match-up Oct. 4 at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.

Here's a look at the two teams:

No. 5 Calgary Dinos (2-0)
 Last week: def. Regina 34-27
 Next week: host Manitoba

Andrew Buckley got the job done in his first CIS start last weekend in Regina as the Dinos remained undefeated and kept their No. 5 ranking with a 34-27 win – but it was a game in which the Dinos never really seemed comfortably in front, and a last-ditch Rams effort in the end zone fell incomplete to preserve the win.

Nevertheless, the youthful Dinos are 2-0 and gaining experience and confidence every day. Paced by the solid running of sophomore Mercer Timmis, who had 254 rushing yards and five touchdowns through the first two games, Calgary has managed to fend off challenges from UBC and Regina to emerge from the season-opening road swing unbeaten and ready for a two-game homestand.

Calgary's return game was impressive against Regina last week, with rookie Rashaun Simonise picking up a big 53-yard punt return to set up a touchdown in the second quarter while Élie Bouka had a long return touchdown called back on a roughing the kicker call.

Defensively, the Dinos have allowed fewer yards points per game than any other team in the conference, despite having just two returning starters on that side of the football. The defence will be stretched against the Huskies' offence that includes a veteran receiving corps and a strong run game. Calgary defensive lineman Brett Wade was named the Canada West defensive player of the week for his 2.5-sack performance against Regina.

Prior to the game, the Dinos will honour their graduating fifth-year seniors, Cuong Thai Lieu and Chris Dobko. Dobko is on the milestone watch this season, sitting within striking distance of the school's all-time receptions record. With nine catches so far this year, Dobko now has 131 on his career, just one back of former teammate and current Edmonton Eskimo Nate Coehoorn for second on the Dinos' all-time list. Leading the way is the legendary Don Blair, who recorded 138 receptions in his illustrious career. Dobko needs just seven catches to tie and eight to break Blair's record.

The Dinos remain at home next week, hosting the Manitoba Bisons on Friday night, Sept. 20. Kickoff goes at 6 p.m.

No. 6 Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0)
 Last week: def. Manitoba 36-34
 Next week: host Alberta

Like the Dinos, Saskatchewan has squeaked out a pair of victories so far this year with a 40-33 win over Regina in Week 1 and last week's nail-biting 36-34 defeat of Manitoba on the road thanks to CIS special teams MVP Denton Kolodzinski.

With Drew Burko at the controls, the Huskies offence is averaging 38 points in its first two games and will look to avenge last season's contest against Calgary where they picked up just 123 yards offence and four points. Saskatchewan comes in with the running back tandem of Dexter Janke and Shane Buchanan averaging nearly 190 yards per game, while Burko is completing passes at a 63 per cent clip and averages 295.5 yards through the air.

Defensively, the Huskies have the strongest run defence in Canada West and will bring pressure on the Calgary offence, with three players in the top five in sacks so far this year.

The sixth-ranked Huskies return to Saskatoon next Friday night to host the Alberta Golden Bears at Griffiths Stadium.

17:00 Regina (0-2) at Alberta (0-2) (SHAW TV & live webcast)

Source: Matt Gutsch, Alberta Sports Info

EDMONTON - Both the Golden Bears and Regina Rams will be searching for their first win of the season when they collide this Saturday, September 14 at 5:00 pm at Foote Field.

Alberta (0-2) has lost the opening two games of the season by scores of 65-41 and 39-36, the second finishing in OT. The rebuilding Bears have rustled up a lot of offence in their first two games under head coach Chris Morris, but haven’t yet found a way to turn that into wins

Regina is also rebuilding, having lost 20 fifth-year players from the 2012 squad, and comes into Edmonton having lost 40-33 to Saskatchewan and 34-27 to Calgary, two of the top teams in Canada West.

Despite the lack of the wins between the programs, Saturday’s tilt, which will be broadcast live on Shaw TV, is shaping up to a good battle.

The Bears and Rams have the top two aerial offences in Canada West, and the top two defences against the pass. Regina leads the conference in average passing yards, with 361.5 per game, while Alberta is second with 352. Against the pass, Regina also leads as they are only giving up 231 yards per game, while the Bears are yielding the second fewest at 249.

As prolific as the Rams have been at marching the ball through the air, however, the Bears have been better at getting into the end zone. Not only do they have six touchdowns via air mail, but they also have four from the rushing attack. Their total of 10 TDs and 38.5 points per game is second in Canada West. Regina sits at the bottom with seven majors, and an average of 30 points per game.

Fourth-year Alberta quarterback Ryan Schwartz is having a torrid start in his first season as a CIS starter. The North Vancouver born QB has amassed 894 combined yards (190 rushing and 704 passing), which is the most in the conference.

His favourite target has been freshman receiver Tylor Henry, as the two have connected 19 times for 242 yards and one touchdown.

The only combo that has been hotter has been Regina’s Cayman Shutter and receiver Kolten Solomon. Although he only has nine catches, Solomon leads Canada West in receiving yards (245 yards), average yards per catch (27.2), and average yards per game (122.5). Shutter, who previously spent three seasons at the University of Hawaii, paces the conference in passing yards with 361.5 per game.

The difference in the game, the difference between a win and a loss, could come down to Alberta’s ability to rush the ball against Regina’s defence. The Bears have two of the top six rushers in the conference. Rookie running back Ed Ilnicki, starting for the Spruce Grove Panthers high school team last year, is fourth in Canada West rushing with 212 yards and one TD through two games. Two spots below him is his quarterback. Schwartz has called his own number 24 times, resulting in 190 yards and two touchdowns. He boasts an impressive 7.9 yard average, and his longest of the season is a 40-yard dash.

Both the Rams and Golden Bears have struggled to stop the run this season with both teams ranking in the bottom third against the rush.

Yet while Alberta is generating 221 yards of rush offence every game, which is third best in Canada West, the Rams are dead last when handing the ball off. A committee of Rams, consisting of Dillon Dawson, Jens Johnson, and Michael Kiapway, have picked up just 69 rush yards in total through two contests. Kiapway, however, did roll over the Bears for 124 yards during a 31-17 Regina win on September 14, 2012 in Edmonton.

A win this Saturday would be huge for the Bears, as not only would it be their first in 19 games, but it would boost confidence and morale before the team faces off against the conference-leading Saskatchewan Huskies (Sept. 20 in Saskatoon) and the five-time defending Canada West champion Calgary Dinos (Sept. 28 in Edmonton).

19:00 Laurier (0-3) at Waterloo (1-2) (live webcast)

Source: Jamie Howieson, Laurier Sports Info

WATERLOO, Ont.- City bragging rights will be on the line Saturday night as the Wilfrid Laurier University men's football teams heads across University Avenue to take on the Waterloo Warriors.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Warrior Field and the game can be heard live on RadioLaurier.com.

A game that is always circled on the OUA football calendar each season, this year's edition of the Battle of Waterloo promises to be another exciting contest as two teams battling to establish themselves in the conference will take the field. It should also be a packed house at Warrior Field as, unlike in previous years when the game has been played during the Thanksgiving weekend, students from both schools will be able to attend and support their teams.

Laurier has historically dominated this matchup, winning the last nine meetings dating back to 2003 and 37 of 52 games overall. However, when the two teams faced off last season, it was a defensive battle with the Laurier and Waterloo combining to score the fewest points in a game between the two teams all-time, a 12-0 Laurier victory.

The Hawks enter Saturday's game looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to the York Lions last week. Laurier, who jumped out to an early 15-0 lead, could not hold off the Lions is the second half as they eventually lost 33-20, snapping their nine game winning streak against York. Despite the loss, the purple and gold got their running game in order as starting back Dillon Campbell of Whitby, Ont., rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown.

Meanwhile, the Warriors come into the game coming off their first win of the season over the newest addition to the OUA, the Carlet on Ravens. Playing the conference's youngest team, Waterloo got strong performances from quarterback Jamie Cook of Collingwood, Ont., and running back Danny Silvestri of Waterloo, Ont., to lead them to victory.

While the offences will be key for both teams, it appears as though the defences could decide a winner on Saturday night. For the Hawks, that will mean defensive coordinator Ron VanMoerkerke's group will need to continue to perform as they have all season. Laurier currently ranks in the Top 4 in the conference in both pass defence, allowing just 218 yards per game, and scoring defence, allowing 27 points per game.

It is a different story for Waterloo, however, and one that the Hawks will need to take advantage of on offence. The Warriors are 10th in the OUA in both scoring and rushing defence and eighth in passing defence. If Laurier can recapture their form from the opening half against York last wee k and the second half against Toronto two weeks ago, the team will be in good shape to break into the win column.

With a sellout expected, the Waterloo Athletics department is encouraging fans to bring lawn chairs to the game and purchase $5 tickets which grant them access to the berm on the opposite side of the field from the bleachers. Tickets for the game can be purchased at the gate on game day.

NOTES: The game will be webcast by Warrior TV...Campbell currently finds himself ranked sixth in the OUA in rushing with 203 yards through three games...defensive back Taylor Calverley of Kettleby, Ont., and linebacker Thomas Majka of Mississauga, Ont., are both tied for eighth in the league in total tackles with 18...fifth year receiver Isaac Dell of Niagara Falls, Ont., will be playing in his 30th career regular season contest for Laurier on Saturday

19:00 Bishop’s (1-1) at Sherbrooke (0-2)

SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop’s Gaiters are set to kick-off for the second time in three weeks against their cross-town foes, the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in RSEQ University Football action.  This time when the two teams meet at Stade de L’Universite de Sherbrooke on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. the Mayor’s Cup is also on the line.

The Gaiters (1-1) topped the Vert et Or (0-2) in dramatic fashion in week one at Coulter Field.  A 40-yard Sherbrooke field goal missed wide left as time expired to give the purple and silver a 28-27 win.  In that game Gaiters quarterback Jordan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) was nothing short of sensational.  He was 26-37 for 387 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, a performance that earned him RSEQ and CIS offensive player of the week honours.

Sherbrooke is coming off a 20-0 home opening loss at the hands of the No.1 ranked Laval Rouge et Or last week while the Gaiters, ranked tenth at the time, lost 44-18 to the No. 3 Montreal Carabins in Montreal.

Saturday will mark the eighth time the Mayor’s Cup will be played with Sherbrooke winning it on six occasions.

Expect an aerial attack from both sides on Saturday night.  In their first meeting the two teams combined for over 930 yards of total offense and Bishop’s currently boasts the top passing offense in Quebec while Sherbrooke is second.

“I think we have the two best quarterbacks in the country,” said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey while referring to Heather and Jeremi Roch-Doyon (Montreal), Sherbrooke’s signal caller. “That being said we expect a physical game on Saturday.  We will have to be ready and match Sherbrooke’s intensity.  We made a few mistakes last week but are cleaning them up in practice this week.”

The Gaiters and Vert et Or will kick-off for the annual awarding of the Mayor’s Cup on Saturday night at the Stade de L’Universite de Sherbrooke at 7 p.m. It will be broadcast live on Estrie 107.7 FM and is also available on the web.  Remember to check out www.gaiters.ca for all the latest news and information on the purple and silver.
