Source: Pierre Arsenault, Mount Allison Athletics Mounties Retire Eric Lapointe’s Number 5 at Homecoming SACKVILLE, N.B. - On an afternoon where the visiting McGill Redmen defeated the host Mount Allison Mounties 48-17, the real Homecoming story was the retirement of Eric Lapointe’s famous #5. The most successful Mountie of all-time had his number retired by the Mounties at halftime of an entertaining Homecoming game where teams traded points early, before McGill pulled away during the 2nd half. Mount Allison got off to a quick start when linebacker Te Nguyen intercepted Jonathan Collin’s pass on the 2nd play from scrimmage. The Mounties started with the ball on the McGill 11 yard line and 3 plays later Jordan Botel rushed for 3 yards for the game’s first touchdown. McGill answered right back with a major of their own, needing only two plays, the second of which being a 33 yard run by Luis Guimont-Mota. Three minutes later, the Mounties’ defense was at it again when Ty Nguyen recovered his second turnover of the game, this time jumping on a McGill fumble on their 50 yard line. The Mounties offense went right back to work, starting with a 31 yard completion from Alex Field to freshman Rodreke Joseph. After a 9 yard rush by Botel, Field found Joseph again, this time in the end zone to put the Mounties up 14-7. Field, a third year quarterback from Darmouth, NS had his first CIS start, playing in place of injured Brandon Leyh who was sidelined with a knee injury. Field finished the game 17-27, good for 127 yards passing, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. McGill once again answered quickly, with Collin finding Joel Brtka from 19 yards out to even the score. McGill took their first lead of the game with 6 minutes remaining in the first quarter when Collin kept it himself and scampered 11 yards for the score. McGill failed to convert the extra point, leaving the score at 20-14. At the end of the first quarter the Mounties used a fake punt by kicker Kyle McLean to pick 40 yards and keep their drive going. This would eventually lead to a 31 yard field goal by kicker Renaud Labrecque. McGill would add a field goal of their own on the last play of the 1st half when Samy Rassy connected from 20 yards out. As teams left the field at half time McGill led 23-17. It was all McGill in the 2nd half as they picked up 13 points in the 3rd quarter and 9 points in the fourth quarter to finish with a 48-17 victory. McGill’s Jonathan Collin threw for 368 yards and 2 touchdowns along with 2 interceptions, while Luis Guimont-Mota led the rushing attack with 141 yards on 18 carries. Rodreke Joseph who continues to impress at the receiver position had 6 catches for 67 yards and 1 touchdown, while Jordan Botel had 49 yards rushing on 18 carries. On defense, the Mounties were led by halfback Matt Montgomery who had 12.5 tackles on the day. Te Nguyen had 9.5 tackles along with an interception and a fumble recovery for the Mounties while Michael Bohan also had an interception for the Mounties. The day, however, belonged to the most famous Mountie of all-time Eric Lapointe from Brassard, QUE. During a ceremony at half time to unveil the Lapointe banner at MacAulay Field, Mounties Director of Athletics and Recreation Pierre Arsenault commented, “today we hang a banner to commemorate everything Eric accomplished during his career and to symbolize everything he represents as a player and a person. No other player will ever wear #5 five again for the Mount Allison Mounties. Eric, #5 now forever belongs to you.” For his part, Lapointe was quick to thank those around him for his career accomplishments. “I have never really had the chance to say thank you to the community of Sackville and to the many fans who have supported me during these years. Today, I would like to say thank you very much for this wonderful honour.” The Mounties return to action this Friday, September 20th when they host the Saint Mary’s Huskies at 7PM on their only night game of the 2013 season.

Source: Eric Cederberg, Acadia Manager, Events & Communications WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The CIS No. 1 ranked Laval Rouge et Or remain undefeated after three weeks of play in the RSEQ football conference after posting a 26-14 win over the unranked Acadia Axemen in one of four games this past weekend in AUS-RSEQ interlock play. Boris Bede hammered home three field goals from the 29, 27 and 24 yard lines to give the Rouge et Or a six point lead in the closing minutes of the first half. Pascal Lochard opened the scoring eleven minutes into the first quarter on a five yard toss by starting Tristin Grenon that capped a 55 yard, 7 play drive. Grenon was 10 for 17 for 109 yards on the day and was later replaced by Alex Skinner. Bede added the first two of three field goals to give Laval a 13-0 lead ninth minute mark of the second quarter. Not giving up in the closing seconds of the second quarter, the Axemen sent runningback Thomas Troop scampering in for the 18 yard major with just over five minutes remaining in the half. The touchdown ended an 87 yard drive that included a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty on a 19 yard pass reception by Acadia's Andrew Healy. The third quarter only saw a rouge scored by Laval that bumped the lead to 14-7, but the final frame included the last field goal by Laval's Bede and a Felix Lachasseur 2 yard reception from replacement quarterback Alex Skinner at the eight minute mark of the fourth quarter. Laval's final points were a team safety after an Acadia snap over the head of senior quarterback Evan Brown soared into the end zone causing Acadia fans to rise in panic. With 2:54 remaining in the game, 2012 AUS rookie of the year, Thomas Troop added his second touchdown of the day on a 1 yard dive into the end zone to end the scoring at 26-14. The Rouge et Or posted 388 net yards of offense compared to Acadia's 240, but 136 yards in penalties evened the playing field compared to 77 yards in penalties experienced by the Axemen. Troop out-rushed Pascal Lochard's 90 yards on the ground with a game high 94 yards on 14 carries, while Acadia starting quarterback Evan Brown - AUS two-time AUS Most Valuable Player Kyle Graves' under-study for the last two seasons - had a game high 154 yards in passing and was 23 for 38 in the air with one interception. Acadia's head coach Jeff Cummins was happy with the effort but had words on the future development of the team. "I think we grew as a team and got better today but wasn't exactly what I was looking for; however we got better on offense and we played strong on defense. We played well on special teams". Cummins added, "I just want to keep growing game in and game out until the end of the season so we are playing our best football by week eight. We are not where we want to be. I am not happy with the loss and don't get gratification from a moral victory. We are better today and I can be happy with that, but the bottom line is that we are 0-2." The Axemen will hit the road next weekend and will be in Antigonish to take on the 2-0 StFX X-Men. Acadia dropped StFX 19-15 in preseason play on August 30. The Rouge et Or will prepare to take on the No. 4 ranked Montreal Carabins next Sunday at home in Quebec

The win evens McMaster’s OUA season record to 2-2 while York drops to 1-2. Vandervoort collected 117 yards on five receptions to finish as the game’s top receiver. Ferguson would finish the game 23-34 for 269-yards throwing with five touchdowns and no interceptions. The duo would break a 10-10 tie with just 23 seconds remaining in the first half with the first year receiver, Vandervoort, catching a 10-yard pass from Ferguson to make the score 17-10. The two would go on to connect for the next two Marauder touchdowns with Ferguson finding Vandervoort wide open on a 40-yard strike in the third quarter and on a 30-yard toss early in the fourth. McMaster put together 24 points in the second half after a sluggish opening two quarters to record their 30th win since 1971 against the Lions. Their all-time record against York sits at 30-12 with their last loss coming back in 1997. York’s Eroll Brooks of Toronto, Ont., nearly pushed over 200-yard mark against the Marauders taking the ball 20 times for 193-yards. Myles Gibbon of Montreal finished 18-for-30 with 231-yards in the loss recording one touchdown while punching in another on the ground. Next week McMaster travels to meet the undefeated Guelph Gryphons (3-0) in Guelph, Ont. while York visits winless Carleton (0-3) in the nation’s capital. NOTES: McMaster’s kicker Tyler Crapigna of Nepean, Ont. converted a pass on a fake punt attempt, throwing a 20-yard bullet to Andrew Sinclair of Denfield, Ont.; that conversion set-up the Vandervoort-Ferguson 10-yard touchdown just before the half. StFX | 35 | Concordia | 18 | Final | Box Score |
Source: Catherine Grace, Concordia Sports Info MONTREAL - There’s was a lot of pre-game hype about top-rated draft prospects Devon Bailey of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men and Concordia Stinger Kris Bastien going head-to-head when their teams met at Concordia Stadium in Montreal on Saturday afternoon. But it was another receiver, wide-out Jordan Catterall, who stole the show. He caught six passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns to help St. FX defeat the Stingers 35-18. The X-Men were clinging to a 19-18 lead at the start of the fourth quarter when Catterall caught fire. With 12:01 left to play, he scored on a 50-yard play from quarterback Clay Masikewich. Ten minutes later he did it again. This time on an 85-yard pass-and-run play that put the game out of reach for the Stingers. Bailey, a fourth-year wide receiver, was ranked No. 2 overall in the CFL Scouting Bureau rankings released earlier this week. He hauled in three passes for 70 yards and a major. Bastien, a senior slotback, was listed in the No. 11 spot. He caught five passes for 65 yards in the game. Bailey and Bastien were the only receivers listed in the Top 15 players for the 2014 CFL draft. The X-Men had 16 first downs and 350 yards of offence, while the Stingers rolled up 26 first downs and 411 yards of offence. Concordia dominated virtually every statistical category expect one – turnovers. The Stingers turned over the ball six times – three interceptions, one fumble and twice on downs. St. FX turned the ball over twice - one fumble and once on downs. The X-Men now boast a 2-0 win-loss record while the Stingers fall to 0-3.

Ottawa | 27 | Western | 83 | Final | Box Score |
Source: Tony von Richter, Western Communications and Media Relations Western Mustangs defeat Ottawa 83-27 in second highest scoring game in OUA history LONDON, Ont. — The Western Mustangs football team picked up an important victory over the University of Ottawa on Saturday afternoon at TD Stadium, defeating the Gee-Gees 83-27 to remain undefeated this season. Along with the win the Mustangs narrowly missed out on making history. Western’s 83 points scored were only four points away from eclipsing their team record for most points scored in a game, which remains 86 points. The final score of 83-27, too, fell just one point short of overtaking the OUA record of 111 total points scored in a match. Despite the lopsided win Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall says his team needs to play better to be considered a great football club. “Certainly the goal of the season at the beginning of the year was to beat the University of Ottawa in this football game, but our goal is to get better and getter each week,” he said after the game. The Mustangs potent offence was led by quarterback Will Finch who threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 63 yards and added one rushing touchdown. The Burlington native spread the ball around on Saturday as three different Western players each had five receptions with Brian Marshall leading the way, hauling in three touchdown passes. Running back Garret Sanvido led the Mustangs ground game, putting in his best performance of the 2013 season with 180 yards rushing on 12 carries with two touchdowns. Fresh off being listed in sixth in the latest CFL Scouting Bureau rankings veteran linebacker Beau Landry had another strong game leading the Mustangs defence with 10.5 tackles, one sack and two fumble recoveries. Sean Blake followed with 6.5 tackles, while Pawel Kruba recorded 4.5 stops on the day along with his third interception in two games, taking this one back for a touchdown. Kicker Lirim Hajrullahu went 3-3 on field goals while adding ten extra points, nearly tying his team record of 11 extra points in a single contest. On the other side of the field, Ottawa Gee-Gees fifth-year quarterback Aaron Colbon added to his CIS leading passing totals, throwing for 328 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Receiver Ian Stewart was Colbon’s main target, racking up 148 yards on eight receptions. Scoring came fast and furious during the game’s early stages with both teams trading points throughout the first quarter. The game got off on the right foot for the Mustangs, as kicker Lirim Hajrullahu nailed a 27-yard field goal early in the first quarter to put his team up 3-0 less than three minutes into the game. Ottawa leveled the game at 3-3 on the ensuing drive after kicker Lewis Ward booted his own 27-yard field goal. The two teams would trade points on the next three possessions with the Mustangs scoring first on a 25-yard field goal from Hajrullahu before Brenden Gillanders recorded the day’s first touchdown, running 31 yards for the score to put Ottawa up 10-6 midway through the opening quarter. Yannick Harou answered back for the Mustangs on the next drive capping off a 66-yard drive with a four-yard rushing touchdown to regain the lead. The offensive showcase continued just over a minute later as Finch connected with receiver Brian Marshall on a 32-yard pass to put the Mustangs up 20-10 at the end of the first quarter. Ottawa didn’t take long to respond in the next frame as in the opening minute of the second quarter Gee-Gees quarterback Colbon found receiver Andrew Mullings on a four-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the Mustangs lead to 20-17. Despite Ottawa pulling within three points, the Mustangs began to run away with the game on the ensuing drives. Garrett Sanvido finished off the Mustangs next drive, carrying the ball three yards for his first touchdown of the game to put Western up 27-17. And after an Ottawa turnover a few plays later, Finch scored a 12-yard rushing touchdown to further extend his team’s lead. After Gee-Gees kicker Ward added a 36-yard field goal on the next drive, Brian Marshall responded just over a minute later caching a 17-yard pass from Finch for his second touchdown of the day. Hajrullahu then capitalized on an Ottawa turnover kicking a 22-yard field goal to give the Mustangs the 44-20 lead after 30 minutes. The Mustangs continued to build their lead in the third quarter, with four different Western players recording touchdowns. Garret Sanvido got the scoring started, spinning past the Ottawa defence for a 64-yard rushing touchdown which was followed up a few minutes later with Brian Marshall catching his third major of the game to put Western up 60-20. Western’s defence got in on the scoring action on the next drive when Kruba picked off a pass from Colbon and took it back 50-yards to extend the Mustangs lead. A few minutes later Adam Sinclair added an eight-yard rushing touchdown to cap the score at 74-20 after three quarters. After the Gee-Gees conceded a safety to open the fourth quarter, Mustangs quarterback Blake Huggins entered the game and on his first offensive drive of the game, Huggins would get the ball to the one-yard line and carry it in himself, tallying the Mustangs 10th major of the game and putting Western up 83-20. The final points of the game would go to the Gee-Gees, when Colbon launched a 26-yard pass to Mullings to make the final score 83-27 for Western. While it appeared the Mustangs had a strong grip as the game went on, coach Marshall explained that the Gee-Gees offence always poses a threat. “There was no time to take the foot off the accelerator and say we can’t score more points—that offence can score points in bunches,” he explained. The Mustangs will try to extend their win streak on Saturday, September 21, when they travel to Waterloo to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. and fans can listed to all the action live on 94.9 CHRW Radio or on NewsTalk 1290 CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor calling all the action. Laurier | 41 | Waterloo | 10 | Final | Box Score |
Source: Dan Ackerman, Waterloo Communications Coordinator WATERLOO, Ont. - Third year running back Dillon Campbell (Cambridge, Ont.) ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Laurier Golden Hawks to a 41-10 battle of Waterloo win on Saturday night on Warrior Field. Campbell had 25 touches and averaged 7.2 yards per touch with a 27-yard major in the early going of the second half to give Laurier their first victory of the season. Kicker Ronnie Pfeffer (Kitchener, Ont.) also got in on the action with four field goals. Laurier wasted little time with the first major of the game 2:47 into the contest. Dillon Campbell capped off the opening drive with a 13-yard run into the Warrior end zone. The Hawks padded their lead only two minutes later as kicker Pfeffer drove home a 31-yard field goal to put the visiting side up 10-0. On the ensuing possession Waterloo would again go two and out and a botched punt would give the Hawks quality field position for the third straight drive. Effective carries by Campbell and quarterback James Fracas (Waterloo, Ont.) setup another major capped off by a 1-yard Fracas rush. Up 17-0 the Hawks would again start the drive on Waterloo’s side of the field and Pfeffer would once again split the uprights, this time from 32-yards out. It wouldn’t be until the 10 minute mark of the second quarter that the Warriors would give the home crowd something to cheer about thanks to a 16-yard field goal by Jake Fiorucci (Niagara Falls, Ont.) sending the Warriors into the half down 21-3. Campbell was instrumental in the opening half with 140 of his 180 yards coming in the first two quarters. Campbell would again be the thorn in Waterloo’s side early in the third quarter running through and around several Warriors for a 27-yard dash into the end zone. Campbell’s second touchdown of the game put the Hawks up 28-3 with Waterloo struggling to find their offensive stride from one week ago. That offensive stride would be ignited in the fourth quarter with Glorian Ganza (Kitchener, Ont.) and Ryan Di Risio (Burlington, Ont.) leading the charge. A 46-yard catch and run by Di Risio would put the Warriors in the red zone and the black and gold would capitalize on a 5-yard pass tipped by a Hawk defender into the arms of Cody Tapsell (Kitchener, Ont.). The Waterloo major would make the score 31-10 for Laurier with 11:40 to play. Waterloo’s defence would stand tall and force the Hawks to a two and out but Danny Silvestri (Waterloo, Ont.) would have trouble handling the punt handing back Laurier the ball. The Hawks would turn the Waterloo turnover into seven points and diminish any hopes of a Warrior comeback. Senior runningback Rashad La Touche (Whitby, Ont.) and Pfeffer’s fourth field goal of the game would seal Laurier’s first victory of the season with the 41-10 triumph. With the win Laurier improved to 1-3 on the season while the loss gave Waterloo the identical record heading into their bye week. Video courtesy of Laurier

Bishop's | 22 | Sherbrooke | 21 | Final | Box Score |
Source: Marty Rourke, Bishop's Sports Info SHERBROOKE, Que. – The Bishop’s Gaiters beat the Sherbrooke Vert et Or 22-21 on Saturday night for the second time in three weeks in RSEQ University Football action. This time they earned the Mayor’s Cup with the victory at Stade de L’Universite de Sherbrooke. A Mathieu Paquette 47-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining put the Gaiters up by a single point. The game came to a dramatic end when a Vert et Or 30-yard field goal drifted wide left. After the season opener between the Vert et Or and Gaiters was dubbed as one of the best games in the last 10 years, it was hard to believe that the encore with the Mayor’s Cup on the line could be any more exciting. It was. With the win Bishop’s takes home the trophy for just the second time in its eight year existence. The game got off to a slow start. Just a single Vert et Or point off a missed field goal was registered on the scoreboard in the first quarter. Another single, this time off a Sherbrooke punt gave the hosts a 2-0 lead early in the second quarter. Paquette, a Sherbrooke native, got the Gaiters on the board with his first of three field goals on the night. The 33-yarder gave Bishop’s a slim 3-2 advantage. After a Sherbrooke safety, Bishop’s scored the game’s first major and the only one of the first half. Jordan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) hooked up with Alexander Fox (Montreal) on a 20-yard pass and catch. Bishop’s led 10-4 at the break. The Gaiters extended their lead 9:17 into the third quarter when Heather found Jerome Mercier (Quebec, Que.) on a 13-yard strike. The Gaiters scoring drive was aided by 50 yards of Sherbrooke penalties. The Vert et Or answered back less than two minutes later with their first touchdown of the game. The score cut the Gaiters lead to 16-11. In the fourth quarter there were three lead changes, while Paquette made 91 yards worth of field goals and the game came down to the final play. Sherbrooke scored another touchdown just 2:58 in and grabbed an 18-16 lead. Bishop’s mounted a drive halfway through the quarter but managed just a 44-yard Paquette field goal. Sherbrooke made their lone field goal in five chances with 1:32 remaining and grabbed a 21-19 lead. Heather led the Gaiters down the field and Paquette connected on a 47-yard field goal, his career long. The score gave Bishop’s the advantage for good but not without some drama to end the game. In a situation eerily similar to two weeks earlier, the fate of the game rested on the foot of the Sherbrooke kicker. This time it was Sebastien Blanchard (Sainte-Sabine, Que.). His 30-yard attempt missed wide left. O’Shane Daley (Scarborough, Ont.) caught the missed field goal and sprinted towards the goal line. He kicked the ball out of the end zone and out of bounds to preserve the Bishop’s dramatic 22-21 victory. “It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win,” said Gaiters head coach Kevin Mackey. “Finally we got a couple bounces to go our way and Mathieu hit a big 47-yard field goal at the end of the game. This is a huge stepping stone for the foundation of what we want to do. Guys are resilient and guys played hard. Football is an emotional game and it’s the will to win. We made fewer mistakes and were more disciplined and we have to continue what we are doing.” Unquestionably the Gaiters were more disciplined as they were penalized eight times for 55 yards while Shebrooke took 18 penalties for 205 yards. Paquette was a perfect 3-for-3 on the night while Blanchard struggled, going 1-for-5. All other statistical categories leaned towards Sherbrooke as they out-gained Bishops 604-346 yards and ran 70 plays to Bishop’s 57. They also had the ball on offense for 9:38 more than the Gaiters; however Bishop’s led 22-21 on the scoreboard at the end of the game. The Gaiters (2-1) will gear up for a pair of home games in the next two weeks. On Saturday, September 21 they face the Concordia Stingers (0-3) at 1 p.m. on Coulter Field. The match-up is Bishop’s annual homecoming game. Follow the Gaiters throughout the 2013 campaign at www.gaiters.ca. Game Notes: Heather finished 18-38 with two touchdowns and two interceptions…Fox caught five passes for 48 yards and a touchdown…Paquette also averaged 42.3 yards on seven punts and his 47-yard field goal ties the long in the CIS this year.
