OTTAWA (CIS) – The CFL Scouting Bureau released its second prospect list for the league’s 2013 Canadian Draft on Wednesday, with four CIS players earning a spot in the Top 5.
In total, seven CIS standouts cracked the 15-player list, one less than in the initial report published by the CFL on Sept. 19.
After being tagged as the draft’s top prospect three months ago, University of Regina defensive tackle Stefan Charles drops to No. 4 on the new list. Taking his place atop the chart is Bo Lokombo, a linebacker from Oregon who was ranked third in September.
Joining Charles in the Top 5 are McMaster offensive tackle Matt Sewell at No. 2, Calgary defensive lineman Linden Gaydosh at No. 3 and McMaster defensive end Ben D’Aguilar at No. 5. Regina offensive lineman Brett Jones (No. 11), Calgary running back Steven Lumbala (No. 13) and Calgary linebacker Mike Edem (No. 14) round out the CIS selections.
Sewell and D’Aguilar, who led McMaster to a second straight OUA title this fall and helped the Marauders reach the Vanier Cup championship game for the second consecutive season, are the big winners on the new list among CIS players, moving up two and five spots, respectively.
Sewell, a 6-foot-8, 330-pound specimen from Milton, Ont., was named an all-Canadian for the second year in a row and helped quarterback Kyle Quinlan claim the Hec Crighton Trophy. D’Aguilar, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound native of Hamilton, was awarded the J.P. Metras Trophy as the country’s top down lineman after he set a single-season CIS record with 12.5 sacks in eight conference games.
Gaydosh is down one position from the September list, Jones is down two, Lumbala dropped all the way from No. 5, while Edem was unranked three months ago.
Last year, University of Saskatchewan offensive lineman Ben Heenan topped the first two Scouting Bureau lists before dropping to second place in the third and final rankings. In May, he became the sixth CIS player in as many years – and the 10th in the past 13 years - to be selected first overall in the CFL Draft when the Saskatchewan Roughriders called his name at No. 1.
The CFL’s Scouting Bureau is comprised of CFL scouts, player personnel directors and general managers from the league’s eight teams.
