PROFILE
StFX linebacker Brett Hubbeard had a breakout year in 2011. He led the X-Men defense, racking up 44 total tackles, good enough for fourth overall in the AUS conference, and also led the team and was fifth in the conference with 9 tackles for a loss (1.29 avg/game). Brett registered his first career sack in a Week 2 loss at Concordia.
His efforts as a sophomore were rewarded with a nod to the AUS all-star team and an invitation to the East West Bowl hosted by Western University.
Upon learning of his selection to the East Bowl roster, Hubbeard commented, “I was very excited. It was one of the goals I set for myself before last season. Representing StFX at the East-West Bowl was a great experience; being around the best coaches and players in the CIS has definitely made me a better player.”
The 6-foot-0, 230-pound linebacker didn’t disappoint at the East West Bowl prospects game either, as he led all tacklers from both sides, posting 9.5 tackles (five solo and nine assisted), including two tackles for a total loss of eight yards, en route to assisting the East squad to a 24-16 victory.
Looking ahead to the 2012 season, the X-Men defensive player of the year states, “I am very excited for this upcoming season, we have put a lot of hard work in this off-season to become better as a team. We have experience at every position this year, which is going to help the new guys coming in adapt and learn how we do things at StFX. I expect that we will be playing for the AUS championship on Nov. 10th...anything less will be a disappointment.”
Heading into his third season, he will be looked upon to anchor the X-Men defense and be a leader both on and off the field.
“Playing for StFX has meant a lot to my life,” comments Hubbeard. “It has not only made me grow as a football player, but it has made me grow as a person.”
