PROFILE

In his first four season with the Manitoba Bisons, Teague Sherman has been the pillar of the defence as he has manned the safety position throughout his university career. Now, as he enters his fifth and final season at Manitoba, Sherman wants to lead the team to a place that they have not enter during his career - earn their first post-season appearance since the program won the 2007 Vanier Cup Championship.

Sherman commented prior to the start of the 2012 training camp, “I believe this team is ready to make the leap into the playoffs. I am looking forward to playing in the competitive Canada West conference again and excited at the possibility of this year’s edition. My goal is to make the playoffs in my final year and help wherever I can to make that happen.”

The 24 year-old, Edmonton native has been the leader of the team on and off the field throughout his years as he will be named a captain for an unprecedented fourth consecutive season plus is an CIS Academic All-Canadian. In addition, Sherman comes off his best season on the field as he finally earned national recognition with his first selections as a Canada West All-Star and CIS First Team All-Canadian in 2011. In his fourth season, Sherman was the ‘shutdown’ player as teams tried to avoid him as he still compiled 25.5 total tackles (seventh on the team), one interception and four break-ups.

Sherman has had one of the most prolific careers at the safety position while quietly moving up the Bisons and conference record books. Over his first four seasons, Sherman has registered 114.5 (92 solo) total tackles, eight interceptions, 19 break-ups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble while starting and playing in 30 of 32 conference regular season games.

Bison football head coach Brian Dobie, entering his 17th season at the helm, stated about Sherman, “Teague has evolved and grown as a player and a leader over the years. He has shown marketed improvement every year and it culminated in being named as a CIS All-Canadian last season and as well achieving Academic All-Canadian status. We will lean on him this season to provide more leadership and push everyone in the program to achieve our first goal of reaching the playoffs during his fifth and final season at Manitoba.”

Sherman will anchor a strong defensive unit at the University of Manitoba campus that has seven of 12 starters returning from last season when the young team went 3-5 and did not qualify for the playoffs. With the 5’11”, 195 lbs. safety back for his final season, the Bisons are poised to make their long-awaited return into post-season action and Sherman to be front and center to lead the drive back with another award-winning season.
