Last-minute field goal gives Gaiters 18-17 win at Concordia

MONTREAL - A 22-yard field goal by Josh Maveety (Kingston, Ont.) with 24 seconds left lifted the No. 9-ranked Bishop's Gaiters to an 18-17 victory over the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Football League action today. Maveety's field goal capped a Bishop's comeback from 17-7 down with three minutes to go in the game.

The Gaiters' comeback started with 2:43 left, when David Haddrall (Kingston, Ont.) caught a seven-yard pass from Jesse Andrews in the back of the end zone, pulling the Gaiters to within three points at 17-14, capping a six-play, 75-yard drive. On the ensuing kickoff, Maveety fired the ball through the end zone to score an 85-yard single, cutting the margin to 17-15.

The Gaiters defence forced a two-and-out on Concordia's next series, giving the Gaiters the ball at their own 45-yard line with 1:46 left. Three plays later, after a 17-yard rush by Andrews, the Gaiters had the ball on the Concordia 17. A two-yard dive to the middle by Matt Burke (Timberlea, N.S.) set up Maveety's game-winning kick.

Maveety, the leading scorer in the CIS, finished the game with 12 points, as he was good on three of four field goal attempts (from 19, 15 and 22), scored one conversion and added two single points.nullnbsp;

Place kicker Rene Paredes accounted for 15 of Concordia's points, as he connected on all five of his field goal attempts, including a 48-yarder. The Stingers also added a safety touch. This marks the first time since a 24-5 win over Montreal on September 22, 2007 that the Gaiters have held a team without a touchdown.

Concordia outgained Bishop's 402-311 in the contest, and made 21 first downs to the Gaiters' 18. Concordia, however, committed four turnovers, while Bishop's made only two.

Andrews went 17-for-28 for 219 yards and a touchdown, and was the Gaiters' leading rusher, with 49 yards on eight carries. John Jean-Baptiste (Ottawa, Ont.) made ten carries for 47 yards. Geoff Coventry (Ottawa, Ont.) had the first 100-yard receiving game of his career, as he made six catches for 104 yards. Haddrall finished with five catches for 57 yards and his touchdown.

For Concordia, Terrance Morsink went 25-for-41 for 326 yards with an interception. Edem Nyamadi was the Stingers' leading rusher with eight carries for 33 yards, while Dan Rodrigues caught seven passes for 108 yards.

Defensively, Mathieu Boulay (Magog, Que.) led the Gaiters with 6.5 tackles, a forced fumble and 0.5 tackles for loss, while Harrison Maloney (Thurso, Que.) made six tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss. Kyle Exumnulleacute; (Brooklin, Ont.) blocked his second punt of the season. Maurice Forbes led Concordia with 5.5 tackles, including the Stingers' only sack of the contest.

The Gaiters (3-1) return to action on Saturday, October 2 as they host the No. 3-ranked Montreal Carabins (4-0) at Coulter Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The Stingers (2-2) are next in action on Sunday, October 3 as they face the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (3-0).
