CIS football: Uteck & Mitchell Bowls by the numbers

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et Or visit the Queen’s Gaels while the Calgary Dinos visit the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Saturday’s CIS football national semifinals. Here’s everything you need to know about the Mitchell and Uteck Bowls.

UTECK BOWL: No. 2 Calgary (9-1) vs. No. 6 Saint Mary’s (8-1), Huskies Stadium, Halifax, 1 p.m. Atlantic (tape delay to 4 p.m. Eastern on TSN).

MITCHELL BOWL: No. 1 Laval (9-1) vs. No. 4 Queen’s (9-1), Richardson Stadium, Kingston, Ont., 1 p.m. Eastern (live on TSN and Radio-Canada).

0 – Previous playoff duels between Laval and Queen’s. The Rouge et Or and Gaels battled five times in the regular season when they were part of the defunct OQIFC, with Queen’s winning the first two meetings in 1996 and 1997 and Laval taking the annual rendez-vous in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

1 – Bowl victory on the road in four tries by top-ranked Laval. The Rouge et Or beat McMaster 36-32 in Hamilton in the 2003 Mitchell Bowl but lost 24-2 at Saint Mary’s in the 2007 Uteck Bowl, 29-27 at Saskatchewan in the 2005 Mitchell Bowl, and 48-8 at Saint Mary’s in the 2001 Atlantic Bowl.

1 – Game in which Laval quarterback Benoit Groulx has thrown interceptions this season going into the Saturday’s Mitchell Bowl (Groulx had three INTs vs. Sherbrooke in week 7).

2 - Bowl games decided in overtime since the inception of national semifinals in 1967. Manitoba edged Queen's 24-20 in extra time in the 1970 Western Bowl, while Western outscored Acadia 55-45 in OT in the 1995 Atlantic Bowl.

2 – Previous duels between Calgary and Saint Mary’s at Huskies Stadium in Halifax, both Atlantic Bowls. The Huskies won 21-11 in 1992 and the Dinos took a 37-23 decision in 1993.

2 – Different programs led to Bowl appearances by Calgary head coach Blake Nill and Queen’s sideline boss Pat Sheahan. Nill, who guided the Dinos to the Uteck Bowl against Laval a year ago, was 4-2 in national semifinals with Saint Mary’s before moving out west after the 2005 season. Sheahan led Concordia to the 1993 Churchill Bowl (26-16 loss to Toronto) and the 1998 Atlantic Bowl (25-24 win over Acadia) before taking over the Gaels program in 2000.

2 – Conferences that have crowned quarterback Erik Glavic as their player of the year, a first in CIS football annals. Glavic was honoured by AUS in 2007, when he went on to claim the Hec Crighton trophy as CIS MVP, and by Canada West this fall in his first season with the Dinos.

3 – Previous Laval vs. Queen’s meetings at Kingston’s Richardson Stadium, all in conference play. The Gaels prevailed 18-7 in 1996 and 32-7 in 1997, while the Rouge et Or won 33-14 in 2000.

3 – Hec Crighton trophy nominations for Laval QB Benoit Groulx. He became the fifth player in history to receive a third Hec Crighton nomination since the trophy was first awarded back in 1967.

3 – Shutouts in national semifinals history. McMaster blanked StFX 7-0 in the 1967 Atlantic Bowl, McGill beat Manitoba 16-0 in the 1973 Western Bowl, and Saskatchewan whitewashed McGill 22-0 in the inaugural Mitchell Bowl in 2002.

4 – Bowl games decided by a single point. Alberta edged Western 32-31 in the 1981 Western Bowl, McGill beat Saint Mary’s 30-29 in the 1987 Atlantic Bowl, Saint Mary’s sneaked past Western 31-30 in the 1990 Atlantic Bowl, and Concordia defeated Acadia 25-24 in the 1998 Atlantic Bowl.

5 – Seasons since the last time the Bowl match-ups were QUFL vs. OUA and Canada West vs. AUS. In 2005, Laval beat Laurier 30-11 in the Uteck Bowl in Quebec City and Saskatchewan outscored Saint Mary’s 31-16 in the Mitchell Bowl in Saskatoon.

5 – Bowl games in history between Ontario and Quebec-based universities. Ontario teams hold a 3-2 edge.

6 – Consecutive Bowl appearances by Saint Mary’s from 1999 to 2004, an AUS record and second all-time behind...

7 – Consecutive Bowl appearances by Laval including 2009, an all-time record. Up until last Saturday when they defeated Montreal 31-7 for their seventh straight Dunsmore Cup title, the Rouge et Or shared the CIS mark with Saint Mary’s (1999-2004).

7 – Combined points in the lowest-scoring Bowl in history. McMaster beat StFX 7-0 in the inaugural national semifinal, the 1967 Atlantic Bowl.

8 – Bowl appearances as head coach by both Laval’s Glen Constantin and Calgary’s Blake Nill, including 2009. Both sideline bosses go into the weekend with 4-3 national semifinal marks.

8 – Different names used over the years for national semifinals including Atlantic (34), Churchill (14), Western (13), Mitchell (8, including 2009), Uteck (7, including 2009), Central (5) and Forest City (2) Bowl, as well as Yates Cup (1).

9 – Bowl wins by Saint Mary’s. The Huskies (9-11) are tied for second all-time with Saskatchewan (9-3), three national semifinal victories behind Western (12-6).

9 – Games in which No. 1 Laval has held its opponents to eight points or less in 10 overall contests this season. The Rouge et Or allowed a CIS-low 61 points in eight contests in conference play marking the second straight season and the fifth time in seven years the reigning Vanier Cup champions led the nation in that category.

10 – Previous Bowl games between Canada West and Atlantic schools in Halifax. Canada West teams show a 6-4 head-to-head record in Nova Scotia’s capital.

11 – Overall Bowl games in history between Canada West and Atlantic universities. Canada West teams have a 7-4 all-time advantage.

14 – Years since Calgary’s last Bowl win, a 37-7 defeat of Ottawa in the 1995 Churchill Bowl.

17 – Years since Queen’s last Bowl appearance in 1992, a 23-16 Churchill Bowl win over Guelph, marking the third longest streak in history between national semifinal berths. McMaster played in the 2000 Churchill Bowl 33 years after appearing in the inaugural national semifinal in 1967 (Atlantic Bowl), while Manitoba broke a 28-year dry spell in 2001.

17 – Two-game sweeps by Western-most teams since the first national semifinal in 1967. Eastern-most teams have seven sweeps in the 40 years where two Bowl games were played (only one Bowl was played in both 1967 and 1983).

19 – Teams that returned to the national semifinals a year after claiming the Vanier Cup, including Laval in 2009. Defending national champions have an 8-10 all-time Bowl record, including a 1-2 mark for Laval (win in 2004, losses in 2005 and 2007).

21 – Bowl appearances by Saint Mary’s (9-11) including the 2009 Uteck Bowl, an all-time record.

51 – Victories in 82 Bowl games by the Western-most team since 1967.

53 – Points. The margin of victory for UBC over StFX in the 1982 Atlantic Bowl (54-1), an all-time record. Saint Mary’s 51-point win over Simon Fraser in the 2003 Uteck Bowl (60-9) is tied for second all-time with Western’s 54-3 domination of Mount Allison in the 1985 Atlantic Bowl and Alberta’s 53-2 defeat of Bishop’s in the 1971 Western Bowl.

60 – Points scored by Saint Mary’s in a 60-9 Uteck Bowl win over Simon Fraser in 2003, a single-game Bowl record. Laval’s 59-point tally in last year’s Uteck Bowl against Calgary (59-10) ranks second all-time.

100 – Combined points scored by Western (55) and Acadia (45) in the 1995 Atlantic Bowl, an all-time record. Saint Mary’s was involved in the second-highest scoring national semifinal in history in 2000 when the Huskies lost 40-36 to Regina in the Atlantic Bowl.

515 – Passing yards by Queen’s Dan Brannagan in last Saturday’s Yates Cup final, the fourth highest single-game total in CIS playoff history.
