The University of Toronto will host CIS women’s field hockey this fall, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2. The Varsity Blues organized the event on eight occasions in the past, most recently in 2012.
“The University of Toronto has a decorated history and promising future with field hockey,” said Beth Ali, director of intercollegiate and high performance sport, whose school is also hosting the CIS women’s volleyball championship next season. “It’s very fitting that we host this year’s championship on our new water-based turf. It will give our CIS student-athletes the opportunity to use the same facilities as the upcoming 2015 Pan American Games.”
For their part, the University of Victoria and University of Alberta will host swimming (Feb. 19-21) and wrestling (Feb. 27-28), respectively, next winter. The CIS swim meet has been staged at UVic only twice over the years (1994, 2003), while the CIS wrestling tournament has previously been held at the U of A only once, back in 1970.
“The University of Victoria is pleased to once again be hosting the CIS swim championships,” said Clint Hamilton, director of athletics and recreation. “Saanich Commonwealth Pool is a world class aquatic facility that affords an incredible championship venue. UVic and our Vikes program look forward to hosting our CIS competitors in Victoria.”
“It is both appropriate and exciting to be hosting the CIS wrestling championships once again,” said U of A associate director of athletics Vang Ioannides, a former long-time wrestling coach at Alberta. “The last time we hosted was in 1970 when our program was one of the best in the country. In fact, it started a three-year reign as CIAU men’s champions. Fast forward to the 2014-15 season and once again our wrestling programs are amongst the best in Canada. I know the Edmonton wrestling community and Golden Bears and Pandas alumni are excited, and our student-athletes are hungry for a chance to win a title at home.”
Finally, the top cross-country runners in the country will gather at the University of Guelph in the fall of 2015 (Nov. 14). The Gryphons, who have dominated the sport in recent years sweeping both CIS team banners each of the past eight seasons, have previously hosted the national competition on 10 occasions.
“We are thrilled and honoured to host the 2015 CIS cross country championships,” said director of athletics Tom Kendall. “We have a long standing history of excellence in CIS cross country here on campus and in the Guelph community. This will give us a great opportunity to not only highlight our exceptional running program but also showcase the University of Guelph and our first-class Arboretum course on a national stage.”
