Men’s and Women’s Field Hockey
Championships
FISU, the Federation of International Sports Universities, will be
holding the 1st World University Field Hockey Championships in
Edinburgh, Scotland August 29th to September 5th, 2010.
CIS is issuing this call for applications for student-athletes
interested in being considered for selection to Team Canada.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Time Commitment: Spring Selection Event (to be determined)
Late February / Early March
Training Camp (detailed to be confirmed)
July / August
Pre-Event Training Camp
Early August
World University Championships
August 29th – September 5th, 2010
Please note that the selection and preparation events are being
tentatively scheduled. A confirmed schedule will be available once
staff selections have been completed.
Financial Commitment
This is a self-funded event and although sponsorship is being
actively sought to reduce participant costs, it is not guaranteed.
Therefore, all participants should be prepared to assume the full
cost of participation, estimated at a maximum of $4,200.
Selection Process All applications are due no later than 5:00 pm
EST on Friday, February 19th, 2010.
A selection committee will review the applicants and confirm a
long-list for participation in the selection event(s). The athletes
will be evaluated based on their performance at the selection
event(s) and the final roster will be announced by late March,
2010.
Eligibility
Canadian athletes attending any accredited post-secondary
institution (Canadian or otherwise) that meets FISU eligibility
standards can compete for Team Canada. To qualify, athletes
must:
- be a Canadian citizen;
- must be born between January 1st, 1982 and December 31st,
1992
- be an amateur as intended by the International Olympic Committee
and the appropriate International Sports Federation;
- be a student who is registered for, and pursuing a full-time
course of study at a post-secondary institution:
· full-time status must be authorized in writing by the
registrar of the institution
· post-secondary institutions include community colleges,
professional schools, technical schools, C.E.G.E.P., and
universities, in or outside Canada
- or be a former student who has graduated from a post-secondary
institution as a student in good standing, in the year preceding
the event (2009).
Selection Criteria In addition, certain selection criteria have
been identified as pre-requisites for consideration. Under these,
the athletes must:
Women’s Team
- have been selected as a CIS All-Canadian; OR
- been named to the CIS Championship All-star team; OR
- be long-listed with the National Women’s Team program;
OR
- be nominated by their university field hockey program.
Men’s Team
- be long-listed with the National Men’s Team program; OR
- be nominated by their university field hockey program; OR
- be nominated by their PSO.
Applications
All applications are due by February 19th and must be accompanied
by a $750 deposit cheque, payable to CIS 2010 FISU Field Hockey.
Upon selection to Team Canada, the deposit becomes
non-refundable.
Interested athletes must submit a brief resumé of their
playing experience, in addition to a letter or reference from their
institution’s head coach via email to:

2. Call For
Applications: Team Staff for the 1st World University Men’s
and Women’s Field Hockey Championship
What: 1st World University Men’s and Women’s Field
Hockey Championship in Edinburgh, Scotland.
When: August 29th – September 5th, 2010
(Anticipated travel dates of August 25th – September 6th,
2010)
Staff should also be prepared to attend various preparatory events,
as well as a pre-event training camp in August.
Who: The CIS will be sending both a men’s and women’s
team of 16 players, 4 staff (including team leader, coaches, and
medical).
Funding: This opportunity is a self-funded event and, although
efforts are underway to seek sponsorship, this is not guaranteed.
Administration and organization of the trip will be facilitated
through CIS International Programs Services.
Positions: There are four (4) staff positions to be filled per
team: Team Leader; Head Coach; Assistant Coach and Team Therapist.
In addition, Canada will be required to send a FIH rated umpire to
the Championship.
Criteria: Team Leader
a) Previous international or national team experience as a coach,
manager or athlete.
b) Previously demonstrated strong administrative and communications
skills.
c) Previous or current experience coaching field hockey at a CIS
member or other Canadian post secondary institution (preferred)
d) Bilingual (preferred)
Head Coach
a) Previous international or national team experience as a
coach.
b) Previous head coach experience in other team environments
(including the post-secondary level).
c) Currently coaching field hockey at a CIS member or other
Canadian post secondary institution (women’s team ony)
d) Minimum of NCCP level 3 coaching certification or equivalent (or
higher).
e) Member in good standing of Coaches of Canada (preferred).
f) Previous experience at a FISU or similar event is considered an
asset.
g) Bilingual (preferred).
Assistant Coach
a) Previous coaching experience at the post-secondary level.
b) Minimum of NCCP level 3 coaching certification or equivalent (or
higher).
c) Member in good standing of Coaches of Canada (preferred)..
d) Bilingual (preferred).
Team Therapist
a) Previous international or national team or post-secondary
experience with field hockey.
b) Current member of the Canadian Athletic Therapy Association
(CATA) or Sport Physiotherapy Canada (SPC).
c) Bilingual (preferred).
Applicants for these positions:
1) Must be committed to providing a positive international sporting
experience for the players of Team Canada.
2) Must be an active field hockey coach at a Canadian post
secondary institution (for the women’s team only).
3) Must be able and willing to pay the full costs of participation,
including preparatory events and camps. Total cost is estimated at
a maximum of $4,200.
4) Must be available to participate at the World Championship
tournament (August 29th – September 5th, 2010) as well as
various preparation events, including a pre-competition training
camp.
5) Must be willing to participate in event organization, including
liaising with Team Canada players prior to the event to ensure that
they are properly prepared for the World Championships.
Applicants must submit a covering letter, a brief resumé of
their field hockey experience. If applying for the position of Head
Coach, you must also provide a proposal for team training leading
and fundraising from the selection camps through to the FISU
Championships. All candidates must indicate what position they are
applying for and which team by February 5th via e-mail to:
