CIS Takes Rio: Daniel wins silver, five other athletes finish top five at 2016 Paralympic Games

RIO DE JANEIRO (CIS) – After 11 days of competition at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, six current, former or incoming CIS student-athletes are coming home with top-five finishes, highlighted by a silver medal by para-triathlete Stefan Daniel. 

Daniel, the 2015 Canada West rookie of the year who competes for the Calgary Dinos cross country squad, finished second in the inaugural Paralympic Triathlon, with a time of 1:03:05 in the PT4 classification. 

On the track, Shayne Dobson (Moncton) and Jason Dunkerley (Guelph) both finished fifth in 1500-metre event, in the T37 and T1 classifications respectively, while Guillaume Ouellet (Laval) just missed the podium, coming in fourth in the 5000-metre T12/13 race.   

Swimmers Sarah Mehain (McGill) and Laurier recruit Alec Elliot and also finished fourth in the 50-metre butterfly S7 and 100-metre butterfly S10 events. Mehain added a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 200-metre individual medley SM7, and as part of the 4x100-metre freestyle relay team - 34 points race. 

Overall, 14 athletes and four coaches with ties to CIS schools represented Canada at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.
