Mount Royal 88 UBC Okanagan 70

Heat-Cougars Stats

by Justin McCaffrey, MRU Sports Information

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars earned their first win of the season tonight defeating the UBC Okanagan Heat 88-70 in their home opener. Deng Awak led all scorers with 16 points and  Mangk Akwl was a close second with 15 points for the Cougars. Yassine Ghomari  scored a team high 14 points and Landry Ndayitwayeko chipped in with 11 points for the Heat.

The first half remained fairly close as each team played some hard defense. Neither side was giving up any room in the paint and the score stayed low because of it. After one quarter of play the Heat led 16-14. The Cougars took a quick lead and then gave it right back as the game evolved into more of a perimeter game with the congestion inside.  At the half the Cougars led by a score of 38-37.

The Cougars came out at half and immediately attacked the basket, putting their bodies on the line on each drive. The Heat came right back at them showing that they would not be intimidated as they kept the score close. After three quarters the Cougars led 62-59. The fourth quarter is where the Cougars began to distance themselves. Deng Awak was clutch down the stretch and helped open up a big lead. Some late fouls and a few uncontested layups made the score look a little more lopsided than it actually was. The final score Mount Royal 88, UBC Okanagan 70.

Mount Royal now holds a record of 1-2 and the Heat fall to 0-3.

These two teams will play again on Friday at 8:00pm at Kenyon Court.
