Carabins cruise over X-Men in interlock football action

Antigonish, NS - The Montréal Carabins, ranked No. 5 in the CIS, cruised to a 47-0 road win over the host StFX X-Men Saturday afternoon in interlock football action at Oland Stadium.

Player of the game Gabriel Cousineau (Montréal, QC) was 25-of-34 for 286 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Carabins.

Philip Enchill (Montréal, QC) was Cousineau's top target with seven receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown. Manuel Crisi-Lauzon (Montréal, QC) gained 47yards on nine carries to lead Montréal.

Louis-Philippe Simoneau (Trois Rivières, QC) was five-for-five in field goal attempts.

For the X-Men, Tivon Cook (Scarborough, ON) was 12-of-25 for 154 yards, with two interceptions. Dante Djan (Calgary, AB) was 1-of-3 for nine yards in relief of Cook.

Donald Tabor (Dartmouth, NS) led StFX with four receptions for 78 yards, including a 51-yard grab in the opening quarter. Freshman running back DeJon Lynch (Nanaimo, BC) gained 31 yards on four carries to lead the X-Men.

The Carabins led 18-0 at halftime.

The visitors opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 14-yard pass play from Cousineau to Enchill. With the Simoneau conversion, the Carabins led 7-0.

In the second quarter, Simoneau booted two field goals (29 and 16 yards) to stretch the Montréal lead to 13-0. After the X-Men conceded a safety, Simoneau tacked on a 40-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to give the Carabins their halftime advantage.

Simoneau opened the third quarter with a 42-yard field goal to extend the lead to 21-0. Cousineau connected with MikhaḮl Davidson (Montréal, QC) for a 22-yard touchdown to make it 28-0. After another StFX safety, the Carabins led 30-0.

With Montréal driving late in the third quarter, X-Men linebacker Andrew Smith (Whitby, ON) made an acrobatic one-handed interception to thwart the scoring attempt.

Early in the fourth quarter, defensive back Djonatan Buissereth (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) intercepted Cook and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown.  With the Simoneau point-after, the Carabins led 37-0.

Off the ensuing Carabins kick-off, Nicolas Easterbrook (Montréal, QC) made first contact with a high-bouncing ball, which Anthony Coady (Montréal, QC) recovered in the end zone for a touchdown, with the Simoneau conversion making it 44-0. Simoneau wrapped up the scoring with a 32-yard field goal.

The Carabins held a 28-12 advantage in first downs, along with outgaining the X-Men (444-173) in total offense.

On the defensive side, Junior Luke (Montréal, QC) led the Carabins with two sacks and two tackles for loss. Alexandre Doucet (Montréal, QC) led his team with 4.5 tackles (three solo, three assisted), while Jordan Rwiyamilira (Montréal, QC) chipped in an interception.  

For the X-Men, Nathaniel Fermin (Pickering, ON) led with 10 tackles, while Demetrius Ferguson (Nassau, Bahamas) and Ron Omara (Aylmer, QC) added 8.5 and 8, respectively.

Jainyme DaSilveira (Everett, MA) recorded one sack and one tackle for loss, while DB Justin Holland added an interception.

The Carabins improve to 3-1 on the season and return to action Saturday, Oct. 4, when they host the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in Montréal.

The X-Men (2-2) will host the Acadia Axemen during StFX Homecoming 2014 at Oland Stadium Saturday, Oct. 4. Opening kick-off is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
