Box Score Double-double performances from Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson and Philip Barndt led the Calgary Dinos to an exciting 89-87 overtime win over the Manitoba Bisons in men's basketball action on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).

Ogungbemi-Jackson, a Winnipeg native, led all players with 28 points and 11 rebounds. In addition, the third year guard hit buzzer-beating three pointers in the first and third quarters. Barndt had 19 points and 12 boards as well for the Dinos (2-4).

The Bisons (1-5) were led by Amarjit Basi, who had 23 points. He was one of the five Manitoba players who recorded double digits in the scoring in the game.

Calgary led by double digits at halftime but the Bisons clawed back in the second half, sending the game into overtime on a Basi's layup with 11 seconds left in regulation. However, in overtime, the Bisons fell short as two attempts by Basi were no good, giving Calgary the weekend sweep.

"We just couldn't get a break at the end unfortunately," said Bisons head coach Kirby Schepp. "We were much more competitive today which was nice to see. You hope sometimes that that competitiveness is rewarded and today it wasn't."

A three ball from Ogungbemi-Jackson at the first quarter buzzer put the Dinos up by nine points. Calgary kept rolling in the second quarter, extending their lead to 15. The Bisons would fight back and narrow the margin to ten at halftime, 45-35. As a team, Manitoba shot 48.4% (15-for-31) from the field in the first half but struggled at the foul line, making only five of ten.

The Bisons hot shooting continued in the second half and the home team would eventually tie the game in the final minute of the third quarter on a pair of free throws from Wyatt Andres. But Ogungbemi-Jackson gave Calgary the lead back with yet another buzzer beater, this time knocking down a fade-away triple from the deep corner.

Two and half minutes into the fourth quarter, Manitoba took their first lead of the contest on a Basi layup. Calgary would retake the lead late and with the score 78-75, Basi hit a runner with 23 seconds left on the clock to bring the Bisons within one.

The ensuing inbounds play from Calgary resulted in a loose ball but it was recovered by Ogungbemi-Jackson, who was quickly fouled. However, he hit only one of two at the line and Manitoba would take possession down by two. With 11 seconds left, the Bisons put the ball back in Basi's hands, who slashed through the lane and kissed it off the glass to tie it up.

"It was a play where he was one of the first options on it," said Schepp. "They switched on a screen, which caused a bad matchup. We couldn't get the look we wanted but we created a bad matchup."

On Calgary's final possession of regulation, Ogungbemi-Jackson jacked up another buzzer-beating attempt from beyond the third point line but it clanked off the back rim, sending the game to overtime.

Overtime featured back-and-forth action, with much of the scoring happening at the free throw line. With 21 seconds left and the Dinos leading 88-87, Basi missed a layup chance and it was rebounded by Barndt. However, Basi and Dan Penner quickly surrounded Barndt and created a turnover.

The Bisons reset their offense and with six seconds left, the ball ended up in Basi's hands once again but he missed a three point chance. Calgary would rebound and hold onto the ball, drawing a foul. Josh Turner would hit one of his free throws and with no timeouts, the Bisons rushed up the court. Yigit Ozsaynier would launch a last second three from well beyond the line but the attempt was long.

Both teams return to action on Friday, Nov. 22. The Bisons will travel to Victoria to take on the Vikes in the first of two games on the weekend. Meanwhile, Calgary will host Thompson Rivers at the Jack Simpson Gym.
