MONTREAL -- Goalkeeper
Myriam Labrecque earned a shutout and Laval tallied twice in the final 31 minutes to spoil the 2021 RSEQ conference season opener for McGill with a 2-0 decision in women's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.
After a scoreless first half,
Mireille Patry of Quebec City was credited with what proved to be the game-winner on a free kick in the 59th minute of play. Teammate
Audrey Genois, also from the provincial capital, added an insurance marker in the 86th minute.
"We performed well in the first half and forced Laval to play a style that they did not appear to be fond of," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes. "We had two or three clear chances in the first half but couldn't convert. But after Laval scored in the second half, we kind of pushed the play too much. We rushed the play, lost our (structure) and didn't wait for them to come to us."
The visitors held a 16-6 edge in shots attempted, including a 7-1 margin on goal. Labrecque, a 5-foot-11 senior from Granby, Que., was called upon to make only one save for the victory. At the other end of the pitch, Martlets 'keeper
Brenna Bordeniuk, an 18-year-old science freshman from Calgary, made five saves in her university debut and took the loss.
Laval had a 5-2 margin in corner kicks and the Martlets were whistled for nine of the 16 fouls called. The only yellow card assessed in the contest went to McGill rookie
Mara Bouchard.
McGill (0-1) will host UQAM (0-1) on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m., while Laval (1-0) plays next on Sept. 17 at Concordia (0-1).
