Capers top Axewomen 1-0 in Subway AUS Women’s Soccer Championship final to claim 2015 title

(MONCTON, N.B.) – The Cape Breton Capers have claimed the 2015 Subway AUS Women's Soccer Championship banner with 1-0 victory over the Acadia Axewomen Sunday at Stade Moncton Stadium.

The championship was hosted the Université de Moncton. The quarterfinals took place Thursday evening and the semi-final matchups Friday evening. Sunday at 2 p.m., the No. 2-seeded Capers faced off against the top-seeded Axewomen in the championship final game for the conference title and the lone berth at the CIS championship.

The Capers came out strong, registering the first seven shots of the game and denying the Axewomen a single shot until the 22nd minute.

After a scoreless first 40 minutes, AUS first team all-star Keona Simmonds (Brampton, Ont.) notched the game winner and lone marker of the matchup at 41:50.

The Axewomen battled hard in the second half, posting eight shots and six shots on goal. The Acadia defence held the Capers to just three shots in the second frame, only one of which was on goal, but it would not be enough.

Second-year Capers keeper Lysianne Trottier (Barrie, Ont.) held strong, recording six saves for the shutout and the win, including two in extra time.

Third-year Axewomen goalie Emma Connell (Hampton, N.S.) recorded eight saves in the loss.

The Capers will now travel to Vancouver, B.C. to compete in the national championship being hosted Nov. 12-15 by the University of British Columbia. They receive the lone AUS berth in this year's CIS championship.
