Bisons women's hockey upset #7 Regina in 5-3 win

Manitoba splits weekend series

WINNIPEG  - Following a tough loss on Saturday night, the Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team came in Sunday afternoon on short rest for a second chance at upsetting #7-ranked and Canada West points leader Regina at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

After seven scoreless periods, their offence came to life and propelled them to a 5-3 upset win.  With the win, Manitoba moves to 5-4-1, and the Cougars fall to 7-3-0 with the loss.

The Bisons were led by a magnificent performance from forward Kyleigh Palmer, who notched a hat trick with three goals, and assisted on a fourth.  The Bisons also got goals from forward Meagan Vestby and defenseman Caitlin MacDonald.  Goalie Dée-Ana Marion had 30 saves in the win.

Regina answered the first three Bisons goals, as Kaitlin Sherven, Stephanie Sawchuk and Kristin Boan all scored in the game.  Alexis Larson added two assists in the losing effort.  Goalie Jennifer Schmidt had 23 saves.

"We persevered today, I think we should've won the game last night having as many chances as we did," said Bisons head coach Jon Rempel.

"We just tried to throw some pucks at the net like we talked about, and a few took some Manitoba bounces. I don't think it was our best game, but we had enough to get it done."

After losing a heartbreaker the night before, the Bisons came quick out of the gate, grabbing momentum with two early Regina penalties. Though their first apparent goal was blown down by a kicking call, Palmer was able to jam in a rebound of her own shot at the 16-minute mark to put Manitoba up 1-0.  Late in the period, though, Regina answered, as Sherven was also able to slap in a rebound on the powerplay, tying up the game headed into the first break.

The scoring didn't slow down when the teams took the ice for the second, as Vestby turned a breakaway two minutes in into a backhand goal to put Manitoba up 2-1.  Again Regina had the answer, though, coming three minutes later.  Sawchuk, grabbing another loose rebound in front of Marion, put it in to knot up the game again.

The teams went back and forth for a few minutes after that, but Manitoba was again able to pull ahead, as Palmer scored her second off a broken play, sending the puck off a defender and through Schmidt's legs to put Manitoba up 3-2 after two periods.

The Cougars again responded six minutes into the third, as their third rebound goal was put in, this time by Boan. Again it was Palmer, though, who completed her hat track, burying a beautiful cross-ice pass from Vestby to put the Bisons ahead for a fourth time. This time, they were able to get insurance, as Caitlin MacDonald sailed a shot from her own face-off circle into an empty net in the last minute, giving the game its final score.

After the Remembrance Day weekend break, the Bisons women's hockey team will play their next game in Lethbridge on Friday, November 15th. Puck drops at 7 p.m. CST. Regina, meanwhile, heads home to play on the same day at the same time, taking on Alberta.
