Dinos-Thunderbirds Stats

VANCOUVER - The CIS #4 UBC Thunderbirds improved to 7-3 with a 3-0 (30-28, 25-17, 25-21) over the visiting Calgary Dinos (5-5) on Sunday.
 
Ben Chow led the 'Birds with 12 kills, while first-year player Mat Guidi wasn't far behind with 11. Setter Milan Nikic recorded a game-high 42 assists.

Dino Greg Mann led all players with 16 kills and Connor Frehlich contributed eight.
 
Next week, the Thunderbirds will travel to Saskatchewan to take on the Regina Cougars. Friday night's game will begin at 6:30 p.m. Pacific and Saturday's game will be at 5 p.m.

The Dinos will host the UBC Okanagan Heat for two matches next weekend at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

Cougars-Spartans Stats

LANGLEY, BC – The CIS #2 Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Regina Cougars 3-0 on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre - 25-21, 25-9, 25-20.

The win moves the Spartans to 9-1, while the loss keeps the Cougars winless at 0-10.
 
Nick Del Bianco had 16 kills and Ryan Sclater recorded seven kills, seven digs and four blocks.

Andrew Nelson powered Regina, with nine kills, and setter Caleb Eschbach had 19 assists.
 
The Spartans will now head to Winnipeg for the final two matches of the first semester. Trinity Western will be at Manitoba on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30. The Cougars will head home to host the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend in Regina.

VANCOUVER - The CIS #4 UBC Thunderbirds scored a 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21) victory over the Calgary Dinos at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver on Saturday afternoon.

UBC is now 6-3, Calgary 5-4.

Quentin Schmidt, Alex Russell, and Ben Chow led UBC's offence with 13, 11, and 11 kills, respectively, while Milan Nikic recorded a game-high 45 assists.
 
Greg Mann paced the Dinos with a game-high 17 kills, while Darcee Froese and Connor Frehlich contributed 10 and nine. Calgary's Cory Meeuwisse led all players in digs, with 13.
 
The two teams will meet again on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Cougars-Bobcats Stats

BRANDON, MB – Despite playing with a depleted roster due to injury, the Brandon Bobcats showed no ill-effects in making quick work of the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday. The ‘Cats won in straight sets for the second consecutive night. Set scores were 25-20, 25-18, 25-19.
 
Sam Tuivai led the offense for Brandon for the second straight night as well, putting up 16 kills on just 25 swings, good for a .600 hitting percentage. Dan Boutwell was nearly perfect, putting up eight kills on just nine swings.
 
Colton deMan had a team-high 14 kills for the Cougars while Jordan Parkin put up 13 kills.
 
The win improves the Bobcats record to 6-4, the same record as Mount Royal.
 
Up next for Brandon is a weekend home series against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies while Mount Royal will welcome the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

Bisons-Golden Bears Stats

EDMONTON - In a Top 10 match-up between the #3 Alberta Golden Bears and the #9 Manitoba Bisons, the road team came back twice to grab victory in five sets (18-25, 11-25, 25-22, 25-23, 18-16), Saturday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.

Freshman outside hitter Adam DeJonckheere netted 16 kills and 10 digs for the visitors while sophomore outside hitter Devren Dear had 15 kills and second-year setter Luke Herr had 40 assists.

Third-year left side Ryley Barnes spun a game-high 20 kills for the Bears, sophomore RS/LS Ryan Nickifor cracking the double-digit barrier with 10 to go along with a match-high four aces. Second-year setter Brett Walsh earned 43 assists and two aces.

The 6-4 Bears finish off the 2013 half of their season with a two-game series on the road against the Winnipeg Wesmen next weekend while 5-5 Manitoba returns home to host the Trinity Western Spartans.

KAMLOOPS, BC - The #10 Thompson Rivers WolfPack swept the #7 Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 at the Tournament Capital Centreon Saturday - 25-22, 25-18, 25-21.

The WolfPack were led by Brad Gunter, with 20 kills, eight digs, a solo block and three block assists.
Casey Knight had 11 kills, with hree service aces, three digs and one block assist.

Saskatchewan was led by Paul Thomson's eight kills, while Tyler Epp and Evan Ericson each had seven kills.

The WolfPack will visit the Mount Royal Cougars on the final weekend before the Christmas Break (Nov 29-30).  Saskatchewan will visit Brandon.

KELOWNA, BC - The Wesmen and UBC Okanagan Heat once again needed five sets to determine a winner, with Winnipeg emerging victorious this time around in the 3-2 (25-18, 14-25, 25-14, 15-25, 15-6) victory on Saturday.
 
With the win, the Wesmen improve to 5-5 while the Heat drop to 2-8.

Tom Douglas-Powell and Casey Schouten once again teamed up to provide the offense for Winnipeg, combining for 35 kills over the course of the five set victory (18 for Schouten, 17 for Douglas-Powell).
 
The Heat, meanwhile, were led by Nate Speijer once again, with Speijer contributing 20 kills in the evening for a weekend total of 51 kills.
 
The Heat will hit the road to face the Calgary Dinos next weekend, while Winnipeg will host the Alberta Golden Bears at home.

KAMLOOPS, BC — The CIS #10 Thompson Rivers WolfPack came out victorious in round one.  over the #7 Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday at the Tournament Capital Centre.

The ‘Pack rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Huskies 3-2 (20-25,24-26,25-19,25-20,20-18).

Thompson Rivers moves to 5-4 on the year, while the Huskies fall to 3-6.

Thompson Rivers was led by Brad Gunter 's 22 kills in 54 chances, with four service aces, nine digs and three block assists. Colin Carson had 57 assists and nine digs for Thompson Rivers.
 
Saskatchewan was led by Paul Thomson, with 16 kills in 34 swings. Bryan Fraser had 13 kills in 43 chances with 11 digs.

The two teams will play again on Saturday, 6:45 pm at the TCC.

Cougars-Spartans Stats

LANGLEY, BC – The CIS #2 Trinity Western Spartans got back in the win column with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-20) victory over Regina on Friday at the Langley Events Centre.
 
After the Spartans suffered their first loss of the season last weekend against Calgary, TWU (8-1) put together an emphatic win as they were in control from the first serve to the final point. Despite a strong tactical game put together by Regina coach Greg Barthel, the Cougars (0-9) were unable to challenge the top team in Canada West.
 
As a team, TWU had a .421 hitting percentage and 13.5 blocks, compared to Regina, who was held to a .056 hitting percentage and six blocks. The Spartans also had a 7-1 edge in aces.
 
Nick Del Bianco (Surrey, B.C.) led the Spartans with 11 kills and five blocks while Lucas Van Berkel (Edmonton) had eight kills and six blocks and Branden Schmidt (Winton, Alta.) had a match-high eight blocks to go with three aces and three kills. Setter Adam Schriemer (Winnipeg) had 22 assists and a team-high seven digs.
 
Regina was led by Andrew Nelson, who had 11 kills while Rohdri Simmonds had five blocks and four kills. Andre Borgeaud added seven kills and three blocks.
 
The teams meet in the rematch on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.

Bisons-Golden Bears Stats

EDMONTON - Ryan Nickifor had 10 kills as the CIS 33 Alberta Golden Bears scored a straight sets (25-20, 25-16 and 25-16) win over the #9 Manitoba Bisons on Friday at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
 
Nickifor, a second year RS/LS from Sherwood Park, AB, lead all players on Friday with his double-digit kills, but third-year Ryley Barnes had nine kills, a .375 hitting percentage and seven digs, while Tucker Leinweber scored eight kills and three aces in the win.
 
The win boosts Alberta's record to 6-3 and gives them their second consecutive victory following last weekend's split with Thompson Rivers.
 
Manitoba, meanwhile, drops their record to 4-5 on the season. The Bisons, sporting a roster with 16 players in their first or second year of eligibility and just one fifth-year, were led by seven kills from Kenny Rooney, as well as his .385 hitting percentage. Devren Dear added six kills in the loss, while Kevin Falconer had four kills and an ace.
 
The two teams will meet again on Saturday, this time at 6:30 p.m., to close out their two-game series.

BRANDON, MB – The Brandon Bobcats picked up a 3-0 (25-21, 30-28, 25-13) win, but it was anything but easy as the Mount Royal Cougars put up a fight.
 
The Bobcats were slow out of the gates, as Mount Royal stormed to an early 10-4 lead in the first set, living up to their previous 6-2 record. The Bobcats clawed their way back mid-way through the first before putting it away on a kill by freshman middle Ty Moorman, his third of the set.
 
Brandon found their groove in the third and cruised to a big victory. Sam Tuivai led the charge for Brandon with 13 kills, while Dan Boutwell and Brendan White both put up eight kills. David Stasica put up a match-high 31 assists and eight digs.
 
For the Cougars, deMan had a match-high 14 kills. Jordan Parkin had eight kills and Tommy Lyon had six blocks.
 
The win improves Brandon's record to 5-4 while Mount Royal falls to 6-3. The two teams will meet again Saturday night.

Wesmen-Heat Stats

KELOWNA, BC - It may have taken five, but the UBC Okanagan Heat showed a lot of character on Friday in their narrow victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-9) from UBC's Okanagan campus gymnasium.
 
Teaming up to lead the offense for the Heat were Nate Speijer and Jim Bell, who combined for 46 kills on the evening (31 for Speijer, 15 for Bell.
 
For Winnipeg, Casey Schouten and Tom Douglas-Powell had 99 combined kill attempts on the evening, but were only able to put away 35 in the losing effort. Josh McKay was the most effective hitter for the Wesmen, tallying seven kills on 14 attempts behind the efforts of Schouten and Powell.
 
With the home court win, the Heat move to 2-7 for the year, winning two straight at home.  The Wesmen fall to 4-5 on the season.
 
Both teams will resume play on Saturday in Kelowna, with the first set scheduled for 7 p.m. Catch the action online at canadawest.tv.
