Axewomen hand X-Women first loss of the season

Axewomen hand X-Women first loss of the season

Antigonish, NS - The StFX X-Women (5-1-1) have tasted defeat for the first time in AUS regular season play, dropping a 1-0 decision to the visiting Acadia Axewomen (4-1-2) Sunday afternoon at Oland Stadium.

Despite the loss, the X-Women remain at the top of the table in the conference, with 16 points, the same as the rival Cape Breton University Capers.

It was the second match in less than 24 hours for the X-Women, who were coming off a Saturday road win over the Saint Mary's Huskies.

The lone goal of match came in the 34th minute, off a great individual effort from Meghan Earle (Mount Pearl, NL), who beat X-Women goalkeeper Erin Visser (Whitby, ON). Earle's goal was her ninth of the season and leads the AUS in scoring.

The Axewomen outshot the X-Women 20-4.

Emma Connell (Hampton, NS) made two saves for the win, while Visser turned aside 11 shots for the X-Women in the loss.

With the win, the Axewomen moved into a third place tie with the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the conference standings.

Head coach Amit Batra was happy with the road trip win against a very good StFX squad. "Very good team win today. X are a great side and we had to be very disciplined to get the result", said Batra. "Our players gave everything to the literal point of exhaustion in some cases.  We're happy with the result and have more work to do before our next game on homecoming weekend."

Acadia is back in action Friday, Oct. 16, at 5 p.m., when they host the Mount Allison Mounties in Wolfville.

StFX returns to the pitch on the same day and time, travelling to Sydney to face the Capers. Opening kick-off is set for 5 p.m.
