Hawks Can't Stop Huskies

The Memorial Sea-Hawks were defeated 89-74 by the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday night in AUS men's basketball action from The Field House.

The Hawks came out in the beginning of this weekend series slower than expected. The only Sea-Hawk that had a great influence to start the game was Daniel Gordon, scoring the first five points for the Hawks, and continued his offensive contributions through both quarters of the first half.

Saint Mary's was cooking offensively in the first half, posting great percentages across the floor; 50% from the field, 40% from deep, 80% from the free-throw line. At the half, the Huskies held a ten-point lead against Memorial, 50-40.

Aside from their strong offensive capabilities, the Huskies were far more physical than the Hawks, as they controlled most if not all loose balls, and rebounds. Memorial could not keep up the same level of intensity and physicality as the Huskies, despite having a stronger third quarter, with an energized offense.

At the end, the Huskies proved to be too strong on the offensive end, and controlling Memorial on defense.

On a positive note Daniel Gordon was able to put up a strong 35 points for Memorial, leading the Hawks. For SMU, three of their five starters put up more than 15 points each, displaying their confidence on the offensive end.

Memorial will be looking to take at least one game in this weekend series, as each game counts as four-points in the AUS standings. Tomorrow's game will be available on AUStv.ca and tips off at 2:00pm NST.
