Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Gaels finally end 31-game losing streak to hockey Redmen, blank McGill for first time in 36 years

KINGSTON, Ont. – Slater Doggett scored twice and added an assist as No. 8-ranked Queen's finally put a halt to a 31-game losing streak against McGill, blanking the fifth-ranked Redmen 4-0 in OUA men's hockey at the Kingston Memorial Centre on Saturday night.

In ended a four-game win streak for McGill (11-3-1) and moved Queen's (11-4-1) into a three-way logjam with both the Redmen and UQTR (11-4-1) for first place in the OUA East.

It was the Gaels first victory over McGill in a dozen years, dating back to a 5-2 decision in Montreal on Feb. 6, 2004 and marked their first home-ice win over the Redmen since a 4-3 conquest on Nov. 9, 2003 at the old Jock Harty Arena. It was the first Gaels shutout over their long-time rivals since Oct. 18, 1980 and their first home-ice whitewash since Dec. 12, 1964. The Redmen are now 125-51-2 lifetime against the Gaels in a series that dates all the way back to 1895.

McGill had a 27-20 edge in shots but couldn't solve sophomore netminder Jacob Brennan of Halifax -- who started instead of senior Kevin Bailie -- and turned aside everything he faced, improving his unblemished record to 6-0.

The game featured 74 minutes in penalties, including 44 to McGill, and that proved to be the difference as Queen's went 3-for-4 on the power-play, while the Redmen went 0-for-2.

The Gaels led 1-0 after the opening period on Doggett's eighth of the season. Forward Ryan Bloom and defenceman Spencer Abraham each added power-play markers in the second to go up 3-0, then Doggett added another with the man-advantage in the final stanza. Forward Eric Ming collected three assists.

McGill netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard saved 16 of 20 shots and took the loss as his record dropped to 4-2 on the season. He and his teammates will get a chance to avenge this setback when McGill will host the Gaels in the annual Management Winter Carnival Game at McConnell Arena, which is expected to be a sellout, on Jan. 13, 2017.

The Redmen have two games remaining before closing our their fall schedule for the exam break and upcoming holidays. McGill will host York (10-4-1) and Toronto (1-12-2), Dec. 2-3, respectively. Faceoff for both games is 7 p.m. at McConnell Arena. The Gaels take on the Laurentian Voyageurs (7-7-2) at home on Dec. 2.

REDMEN RAP: The Redmen are still contending with a number of key lineup scratches, including  F Christophe Lalonde, who was serving the second of a league-imposed two-game suspension incurred as a result of game misconduct penalties from last week's testy confrontation with Brock... Other scratches were a result of injuries to forwards Daniel Milne, Alexandre Sills and Samuel Hodhod, plus defencemen Etienne Boutet and Alexandre Chenevert.
