Capers top Huskies 2-0 to open season

Sydney, NS –  Forwards 2nd Year Cory Bent (Preston, UK) and rookie Charlie Waters (Lancashire, UK) scored 1st half goals to power the CBU CAPERS to a victory in the opening game of their 2017 season. 2nd-year Keeper Ben Jackson (Bury, UK) earned the clean sheet and the victory for the defending AUS Champions over the Saint Mary's Huskies. Huskies forward applied some pressure for the visitors with 2 shots on goal and keeper Christian Oxner faced 6 shots in defeat.

Turning Point 
1st-year CAPER Charlie Water scored a beautiful goal in the 36' minute and seemed to change the tide of the game. The CAPERS become very defensive and turned away most SMU attacks from that point on.

Individual Leaders 
- 1st-Year Waters led the game with 2 points (1g, 1a)
- Waters and Bent led the game with 1g each
-  Waters & Marcus Campanile (Edinburgh, SCO) led the way with 1a each
- SMU forward Alex Black CAPERS Captain Stuart Heath (Belfast, IE) led the game with 2 shots each

 

News & Notes 
- This was the first game of the AUS season for both teams, 
- The CAPERS are the defending AUS champions and finished 4th and the U Sports Nationals last year.
- The Huskies failed to make the playoffs in 2016
- There were two yellow cards awarded during the game, one to CBU's Caelan Budhoo (Winnipeg, MB) and one to SMU's Tyler Dorey

  • Joel Eckert-Ayensa left the game with injury, it is not expected to be serious.

Up Next 

CBU will next travel to UNB to face UNB on September 16th at 3.15pm. SMU will continue to face St. Francis Xavier Saturday, Sept. 10th at 3.15pm.
