Huskies drop two at home to UNB

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - The visiting CIS No. 7-ranked UNB Varsity Reds defeated the SMU Huskies 108-91 in AUS men's basketball action Saturday night. UNB won both games over the weekend.

UNB's Javon Masters led all scorers with 28 points on the night and was perfect from the free throw line, going 13-13.

Osman Barrie paced SMU with 19 points and added five rebounds.

Jordan Irvine had 18 points for UNB while Nikola Mandic and Ryan Smith each added 16 points for the V-Reds.

SMU got out to a quick 7-0 start before UNB hit three three-pointers for a 20-18 V-Reds first-quarter lead.

Both teams traded early baskets in the second quarter before UNB went on a 7-0 spurt themselves in 92 seconds, extending their lead to 31-23 with 7:10 left in the first half.

SMU cut the UNB lead to 38-35 on a Kemar Alleyne jumper with 3:28 remaining in the half.

The V-Reds closed out the second quarter on a 11-6 run, ending the half up 49-41.

The third quarter saw UNB hit four three-pointers and led 78-63 after 30 minutes.

The V-Reds' hot hand from from three-point land continued in the fourth quarter with five three-pointers for the 108-91 win.

UNB shot 55.6 per cent (35-63) from the floor compared to 44.8 per cent (30-67) for SMU.

The V-Reds went 50.0 per cent (13-26) on three-point shots and the Huskies shot 23.1 per cent (3-13).

Saint Mary's shot 73.7 per cent (28-38) from the free throw line compared to 92.6 per cent (25-27) for UNB, who held the slightest rebound advantage in the game, 36-35.

SMU's Achuil Lual had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.

Marquis Clayton added 15 points for the Huskies along with eight assists. Clayton went 13-13 from the free throw line.

Also scoring for the Huskies were Kemar Alleyne with 12 points, Ryan Augustine 11 points, Aaron Fisher eight points. Jeremy McAvoy finished with six points and Kadeem Thompson added five points for SMU.

UNB goes to 4-0 while SMU is 1-2 in AUS play.

The Huskies return to action Nov. 21 when they visit the Dal tigers in a four-point game in the standings.

The Varsity Reds will host the StFX X-Men that same night. Tip-off in both games is set for 8 p.m.
