Sea-Hawks Earn Another Road Win

Sea-Hawks Earn Another Road Win

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Memorial Sea-Hawks picked up their second straight win over the UNB Varsity Reds with a 3-1 victory Saturday evening.

The Sea-Hawks won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-22. The VReds took the third set 25-23, before the Sea-Hawks prevailed 25-12 in the fourth set.

Saturday's match was the second of three between UNB and Memorial this weekend.

With the win, the Sea-Hawks improve to 10-3. The loss dropped the VReds to 0-12.

Kierstin Fey(Selkirk, MB) recorded 16 kills, 18 digs and three aces for Memorial. She was named the Subway Player of the Game.

Kassandra Menzies(Spirit River, AB) had 22 digs for Memorial, while Sarah Dawe(Mount Pearl, NL) and Jill Snow(Bishop's Falls, NL) had 16 and 15 kills for the Sea-Hawks, respectively.

Maggie McLenahan(Oromocto, NB) led the Varsity Reds with 20 digs, while Julia Diemert(Egbert, ON) and Lauren Joyce(Haywards Heath, UK) contributed 10 kills each for UNB.

"It was a good team effort," said John Slauenwhite, head coach of the Sea-Hawks. "The VReds bounced back tonight and gave us a heck of a game, but we rose to the occasion and kept the tempo up."

The first set started out back-and-forth, but the Sea-Hawks went on a late four-point run and didn't look back.

The second set saw more of the same, but UNB stayed within striking distance, for the most part.

UNB saw some life in a close, hard-fought third set, but fell apart in the fourth. A late five-point run for Memorial only made matters worse for the struggling VReds.

"One of the things we need to work on is sustaining that energy and momentum right through the match, even when there's adversity or a push from the other side," said James Cress, UNB interim head coach.

The third and final match of the weekend between the UNB and Memorial women is on Sunday, January 22. First serve is set for 12:00pm Atlantic
