Women's soccer quarterfinal #1: Simmonds and Blain with two apiece as Capers defeat Panthers 4-1

(HALIFAX, N.S.) – The Cape Breton Capers defeated the UPEI Panthers Friday afternoon by a score of 4-1 in the first quarter-final match of the 2014 Subway AUS women's soccer championship at Dalhousie's Wickwire Field.

With the win, the Capers advance to tomorrow's championship semifinals. 

UPEI opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Meaghan Malcolm scored off a free kick from Danae Iatrou. UPEI looked strong going into the dressing up 1-0.

The Capers turned the jets on in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals.

Subway player of the game Karolyne Blain scored two goals and had one assist. Keona Simmonds also netted two goals in the 4-1 victory.

Meaghan Malcom led the Panthers, with one goal on the day. Keeper Ashley McKenna recorded three saves including a remarkable diving save on a breakaway.

"UPEI played a great a game, they battled for the full 90 minutes," said head coach of the Capers, Ness Timmons. "With the season on the line, we came out and stepped up in the second half."

Cape Breton will now move on to face the Memorial Sea-Hawks in tomorrow's second semifinal matchup at 2 p.m.

The winner of today's second quarterfinal game between the Acadia Axewomen and host Dalhousie Tigers will face the top-ranked UNB Varsity Reds at 11 a.m. in the first championship semifinal. 

The winners of tomorrow's semifinal games will play each other in the championship on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m., to determine the AUS women's soccer champions.
