Dinos notch well-rounded win versus Wesmen

CALGARY – Strong execution at both ends of the field fueled the University of Calgary Dinos to their second-straight win, beating the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch.

Building off an impressive win in their last fixture against the Alberta Golden Bears, the Dinos came into this week with more confidence in their game. With a one-goal lead early, Calgary had opportunities to put the game out of reach quickly, but took full control following a second tally right before the half.

With a 2-3-0 record now, the Dinos move into a tie for third place in the Prairie Division with the MacEwan Griffins. Winnipeg drops to 1-3-1 on the season.

"The credit goes to our players, we asked them for a game plan and they followed it to a tee," said Dinos bench boss Brian McDonnell. "With the way we set up defensively, we were able to limit their scoring chances and we scored when we needed to."

Calgary drove to the net hard in the early going of Saturday's contest and scored in the 10th minute. Taking a cross from the right side by Robin Whittacker, defender Dominick Zator took the ball off his body and in for the game's first goal.

With possession of the ball for most of the first 45 minutes, it wasn't until the 43rd minute that the Dinos extended their lead. Lindon Fedorick earned an assist on a set-up to Andrew Hood at the top of the box where the fourth-year midfielder buried an excellent shot.

"Hood had been frustrated that he hadn't got himself on the board yet. Hopefully he will run with it after today," noted McDonnell.

Making his second-straight start, Colin Hasick's job was kept simple in the first half. The only shot by Winnipeg sailed wide of the net as the Dinos took a 2-0 lead into the break.

In a bizarre scene in the 77th minute, the Dinos sealed the game with a usual marker. With Hood down on the ground, a Calgary shot attempt blasted off the head of the down and out Dino. The ball then bounced to the left side where Fedorick carried in and scored to make it 3-0.

Calgary outshot Winnipeg 21-10. Hasick finished the game with four saves, while Wesmen netminder Joshua Partaker had seven stops.

The Dinos and Wesmen will go head-to-head again on Sunday at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch. Game time is 2:15pm.
