Capers top Sea-Hawks 70-65

(ST. JOHN'S, N.L.) - The Cape Breton Capers defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 70-65 on Sunday afternoon in AUS women's basketball at the Field House. The game was the first of the new year for Memorial, and the second for Cape Breton.

In the opening quarter it was the Sea-Hawks on the board first, taking a five-point lead in the first minute of play. By the end of the quarter, the Capers closed the gap and were leading by two points with a score of 20-18.

In the second and third quarters, the Capers pulled ahead, maintaining leads of 11 and 13 points respectively at the end of each quarter. At the half Cape Breton led 43-32.

The Sea-Hawks came back strong in the fourth and half way through the quarter, Megan Robinson (Waterloo, Ont.) had Memorial within three points of Cape Breton with two back-to-back layups. With 2:42 minutes left on the clock, the teams were tied 63-63.

Despite the Sea-Hawks out-shooting the Capers 20-12 in the last quarter, it was the visitors who sealed the deal with a seven-point run, finishing the game 70-65.

Subway player of the game, Colleen Keane (Ajax, Ont.), took 17 points and nine rebounds for the winners.

Robinson led the Sea-Hawks with 17 points. Tianna Brown (Douglas, Arizona) was close behind with 15 points, and as many rebounds.

The Capers improve to 4-5 on the season while the Sea-Hawks fall to 3-4.

Both teams will be back on the court Monday for their second game of the doubleheader series at 12 p.m. Due to weather delays, the weekend's games were pushed back by a day.
