Soccer Redmen battle division-leading Pats to a draw in flag-filled affair

MONTREAL -- Goalkeeper Antoine Marchal made eight saves for a shutout as the McGill Redmen battled division-leading UQTR to a 0-0 draw in RSEQ men's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium on Friday.

The game was a rough-and-tumble affair that featured eight cards, including a red one assessed to UQTR's Guillaume Comtois-Noël in the 88th minute after having been issued a pair of warnings from the referee. Six different players -- three from each team -- were carded. The Redmen were charged with 11 fouls compared to four by the visitors.

Marchal, a 6-foot-3 management freshman from Montreal, had 14 shot attempts come his way and turned away all eight that were on target. At he other end of the pitch, Dominic Provost earned the clean sheet for the Patriotes with six saves. His teammates chipped in to thwart a handful of other Redmen chances.

Ralph Khayat of Lebanon and Pierre Lepage of France led the home side with three shots apiece.

The Pats had a 14-10 advantage in attempted shots but McGill had a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had two corner kicks.

Only five games remain before post-season play. McGill (2-3-2) will travel to take on Sherbrooke (1-7-0) on Sunday (Oct. 16), while UQTR (4-1-3) hosts Concordia (2-4-2).
