WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen volleyball team continue their winning streak, now grown to four wins in a row, with a 3-1 victory over the visiting UNB Varsity Reds.
Subway Player of the Game, Hannah Helm, delivered four timely kills and played a huge role defensively with three block assists and two block solos.
In the opening set, both teams jockeyed for position well into the game, but finally, the deadlock was broken when Axewoman Lauryn Renzella delivered a kill that pushed Acadia into a comfortable 18-15 lead and eventual 26-24 win.
The second set was another close battle with no team gaining more than a two-point lead. A kill by veteran Sarah Ross followed by a Renzella service ace gave the Axewomen a 25-22 win and 2-0 match lead.
The Varsity Reds, led by Subway Player of the Game Page Lehto effort in setting, pulled away after Adora Rooyakkers posted a kill that tied the game at 17 points.
Four attack errors and two service aces gave UNB a 23-17 lead and eventual 25-19 set win.
The fourth and final set was dominated by the Axewomen. Pushing out to a 20-10 lead, Acadia was relentless in posting 11 kills in the set and forcing UNB errors.
With a 25-12 fourth set win and 3-1 match victory, the Axewomen improve to 6-4.
"Tonight's win was the result of a collective contribution. Regan did a great job spreading our offense, opening up angles for our outside hitters," said head coach Michelle Wood. "For Jamie Crocket, this was her first return to the court after suffering an ankle sprain that removed her from the first half of the season."
The Varsity Reds remain winless with a 0-10 record. Melika Belliveau led the V-Reds with 10 kills, while teammate Page Lehto posted 24 assists.
For the Axewomen, first-year outside hitter Lucy Glen-Carter had a team-high 10 kills and Lauryn Renzella added eight.
"Heading into tomorrow our blockers have to be more disciplined. UNB's attackers did a great job exploiting our hands, using them as a tool on the wing," noted Wood.
The Axewomen and Varsity Reds hit the court at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 13 in their second match of the two-game weekend.
