X-Women defeat Axewomen for second time this week

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) – The StFX X-Women (2-1) earned their second consecutive victory over the Acadia Axewomen (0-4), playing to a 74-54 win Saturday night in their home opener at the Oland Centre.

StFX had a 57-50 victory over the same Acadia squad Wednesday night in Wolfville.

The X-Women were led Saturday evening by a double-double effort from Subway player of the game Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, Ont.). The third-year forward scored a game-high 18 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. She also had four assists and four steals on the night.

StFX got out to a 14-9 lead in the first quarter and did not relinquish the advantage for the remainder of the game.

They were up 38-28 at halftime and 59-40 after three quarters.

Second-year forward Shannon Hatch (Arzo, Switzerland) played a strong game for the X-Women, scoring 14 points and adding a pair of steals.

Melissa Gottschall (Antigonish, N.S.) was also in double scoring digits for StFX with 13 points. Samantha Robertson (Toronto, Ont.) and Kayla MacIntyre (Sydney, N.S.) each scored six points off the bench as all 12 X-Women saw action on the court in a full team effort.

Chanel Smith (Halifax, N.S.) was the high scorer for the Axewomen with 13 points while Emily MacLeod (Fredericton, N.B.) added 9 points and four rebounds and Lauren Jodrey (Hantsport, N.S.) scored eight.

The X-Women were 50.0 per cent from field goal range and 68.8 per cent from the free throw line. They outrebounded the Axewomen 35-22.

Acadia was 27.8 per cent in field goal shooting and 61.3 per cent from the charity line.

Next on the schedule for the X-Women is a pair of games against the UNB Varsity Reds in Fredericton on Nov. 21 and 22.

The Axewomen will host Cape Breton on Nov. 21 followed by Dalhousie on the 22nd.
