Mustangs fall to Gryphons in season opener

GUELPH, Ont. – Goals from three different players helped the Guelph Gryphons earn a measure of revenge for last season's loss in the OUA Championship Game, handing the Western Mustangs women's hockey team a 3-0 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre.

Karli Shell, Kelly Gribbons, and Katherine Bailey each marked their name on the scoresheet with their first goals of the season as the Gryphons scored once in each period. Gribbons was in on all three of her team's goals, assisting on both Shell's and Bailey's markers to finish the day with three points.

Stephanie Nehring got the win in net for Guelph, turning aside all 26 shots she faced, while Kelly Campbell stopped 20 of the 23 shots sent her way in the loss.

The Gryphons opened the scoring midway through the first as Shell recorded her first OUA goal in her first regular season contest, scoring after a scramble in front of the Mustangs net.

Western held a slight edge in the second frame, outshooting their opponents 10-7, however Guelph managed to extend their lead to 2-0 off of a shot from Gribbons in the slot with less than four minutes remaining in the period.

Bailey rounded out the day's scoring at 7:15 of the third period on a power play goal to give the Gryphons a 3-0 win to start the season.

Western now gets set for their home opener on Sunday afternoon against the Waterloo Warriors. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Thompson Arena, and fans can watch all the action live on OUA.tv and listen live on CHRW Radio 94.9 FM.
