MSOC | Voyageurs Down Rival Lakers, Clinch Riley Gallo Cup

Looking to avenge a defeat on home soil against their northern neighbour, Nipissing Lakers, the Voyageurs men's soccer team made the most of their chances and left North Bay with a victory and the Riley Gallo Cup.

The game opened up with some back and forth action before the Voyageurs capitalized on couple of chances.  Dean Pizolinas and Ayden Meilleur tallied just four minutes apart, in the 37th and 41st minutes, to stake the Voyageurs to a 2-0 lead.  The Lakers would answer before the end of the half as Andy Bago converted a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.

The Bago goal would be the only blemish on Connor Vande Weghe's record.  With the Voyageurs only two shots on target ending up in goals, the team looked to Vande Weghe to carry them the rest of the way and, arguably the best goalkeeper in the OUA, was more than happy to oblige.  Vande Weghe made 11 saves on the night, seven of them in the second half and a few of the outstanding variety, to help the Voyageurs clinch the Riley Gallo Cup for the 8th time in it's 10 year history.

Vande Weghe now leads the OUA and U SPORTS in saves with 74 on the season over the course of nine games, 23 more than the next closest keeper in the country and 32 more than the next closest in the OUA.

The third place Voyageurs will now play host to the OUA East leading Carleton Ravens on Sunday at 2:15pm.
