MBB | Voyageurs Fall in Wilson Cup Quarter-Finals
The Voyageurs Men's Basketball team's season came to an end today at the hands of the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The 93-81 road loss marks the end of a season highlighted by many bright spots for the young Vee's.
The elite passing of the Gee-Gees proved to be too complex for the Vee's to defend. Amassing 19 total assists, Ottawa's ball movement was always one step ahead of Laurentian's defensive set. Their passing game bought the Gee-Gees several quality looks at the hoop leading to their 51.7% shooting for the game.
Though the Voyageurs led the rebounding game 47 to 40 and had better ball security (13 turnovers to Ottawa's 15) it was their 35% shooting percentage that ultimately ended their season. In fact, the Vee's 80 field goal attempts eclipsed the Gee-Gees 60 attempts thanks in part to 23 of Laurentian's 47 rebounds coming in the offensive zone. However, it was Ottawa's efficiency with their field goal attempts that mattered in the end.
Kadre Gray wrapped his spectacular rookie campaign with a game-high 39 points and neared a triple-double with his 9 rebounds and 6 assists. The rookie guard once again showed his ability to penetrate the paint and at worst collect the foul. Once at the charity stripe Gray was perfect, knocking down all 15 of his attempts. David Aromolaran continued his strong play as of late, adding 13 points along with 8 rebounds. Anthony Iacoe had perhaps his best game of the year with his 14 point, 7 rebound effort. No other Voyageur finished with more than 4 points.
For the Gee-Gees it was a much more balanced scoring effort. Forward Matt Plunkett led the winning squad with 21 points with Caleb Agada, Jean-Emmanuel Pierre-Charles, and Adam Presutti finished with 16, 15, and 11 points respectively.
In what was positioned as a rebuilding type of season for the Voyageurs, a trip to the Wilson Cup Quarter-Finals is evidence of the quick development of some of the team's younger players and bodes well for the future.
