Comeback victory lifts Sea-Hawks over Huskies

The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-2 in AUS women's volleyball action on Saturday night at The Field House.

The Huskies pounced on the Sea~Hawks early in the first set and pulled away as Memorial could only get to within two points all set. The Huskies took the set 25-19 as the Sea~Hawks had no answer for the Huskies tandem of Maddie Clarke and Lindsay Donovan who had four kills and three kills respectively.

Memorial came out stronger in the second set as Jill Snow and Sarah Dawe found their stride and were aided by timely hitting by Catherine Ducey. The Sea~Hawks lead 22-20 before momentum switched on a serving substitution by Memorial.  Memorial's Sarah Culkin served the ball into the net to pace the Huskies to four straight points before second year Husky Kristina Adler put the set away with the kill giving the Huskies the 25-23 set win.

With their backs to the wall the Sea-Hawks broke through to take the third set 25-22. Jill Snow accounted for 6 points off kills and aces including the final set point set from Maiya Westwood. The Huskies were led by Erin Smith who had four kills and an ace herself as the Huskies could not push ahead.

The fourth set featured a series of runs for both teams as the Huskies erased a five-point deficit twice in the set only to fall short 26-24. The huskies stormed back due in large part to the play of Lindsay Donovan (5 kills) who contributed key points throughout the set only to be outdueled by Memorial's Kierstin Fey who added an ace along with 7 kills. Jordan Hutchison put away the final point to send the match to a fifth and final set.

In the fifth and deciding set Saint Mary's took a 3-1 lead only to have the Sea~Hawks go on runs of 5-0 and 7-0 to give them a substantial lead 12-5. After exchanging two points each the Huskies went on a run of their own to bring them within four points while staring down match point. Memorial collected themselves to push through for the set and match win 15-10.

Second year Husky Lindsay Donovan lead the way for the Huskies with 16 kills, 2 aces, 5 digs, and 6 blocks (solo, 5 block assists) for 21.5 points.

Kierstin Fey led the comeback for the Sea~Hawks with 16 kills, 3 aces, 15 digs 2 Block Assists for 20 points, with Jill snow and Sarah Dawe adding 17 and 14 kills respectively.

The teams are back in action Sunday afternoon at 12:00pm at The Field House.  The game is also available on AUStv.ca.
