The St. Thomas University Tommies defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 6-1 in AUS women's hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

The Tommies opened the scoring near the end of the first period when Olivia Reid was on the doorstep and tapped home the loose puck to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later, the Tommies struck again when Mariah Carey found a rebound off the body of Mounties goaltender Keri Martin to extend the lead to 2-0 for the end of the first period.

Tommies head coach Peter Murphy was pleased with how his team played.

"I thought it went well," Murphy said. "We let up a little bit in the last minute of the second and in the third we just went back at it again."

The Tommies kept up the pressure in the second period when Alex Woods skated in across the blueline and snapped a shot into the top corner of the Mounties net, giving the Tommies a three-goal advantage.

The Mounties got into penalty trouble in the second stanza, allowing the Tommies powerplay to go to work. Emily Oleksuk capitalized to put the Tommies up 4-0 after 40 minutes.

"Our powerplay was a little cold," Murphy said. "The penalty kill was great. The penalty killers are getting better with each other. It can be a weapon for us."

The third period was much of the same for the Tommies as Kristina Kocsis scored early in the period to extend the STU lead to 5-0.

The Mounties were persistent and were rewarded when Cora Place batted at the puck in a scramble and found the back of the net to break the shutout and make it a 5-1 game.

"It was just a miscue for the players on the ice," Murphy said. "We got caught looking at the puck. There's lots of blame to go around, but that was a goal that woke us up."

Becky Conner netted a late goal to cap off the game en route to the 6-1 victory over their provincial rivals.

The Tommies are back in action Friday when the Dalhousie Tigers visit the Grant-Harvey Centre for a 7:00 pm puck drop.
