Huskies top Tommies 5-4 in OT

(FREDERICTON, N.B.) - The St. Thomas Tommies suffered a 5-4 overtime loss to the Saint Mary's Huskies Saturday night in front of 461 fans at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

Ben Duffy had four points for the Huskies, while Kyle Pereira and Gerrad Grant each had two.

JC Campagna led the Tommies with three points. Brendan Childerley and Bryce Milson each had two in the loss.

"The guys played well. They competed extremely hard," Tommies head coach Pat Powers said after the game.

"We did what we had to do to win, but unfortunately we didn't clamp down with a minute left."

The Tommies opened the scoring midway through the period, netting two goals in six seconds. The first came off the stick of Steven Janes, who beat Huskies goaltender Cole Cheveldave on a rebound, and the second came from Campagna.

Duffy responded for the Huskies late in the frame, roofing a rebound over Tommies netminder Luke Lee-Knight to put Saint Mary's on the board.

The Tommies outshot the Huskies 14-9 and led 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Janes netted his second goal of the night on the power play to put the Tommies up 3-1 midway through the third, but Grant profited off a Tommies penalty moments later to bring the Huskies within one.

The back-and-forth continued when Campagna finished a dish from Rankyn Campbell for his second goal of the night and a 4-2 Tommies lead.

The third was scoreless until the final minute, when Duffy beat Lee-Knight with a one-timer from the slot to bring the Huskies within one.

Stephen Johnston denied the Tommies the two points, scoring off a rebound to tie the game and force overtime.

Stephen MacAulay scored the game winner for the Huskies 1:57 into the extra frame.

"We played 59 great minutes," Powers said.  "We kind of found a way to lose tonight and that's something we need to correct moving forward."

The Huskies are back in action Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they host the Dalhousie Tigers. The Tommies will host the UPEI Panthers Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
