Hawks Top Tigers in Home Opener

(St. John's, NL) The Memorial Sea-Hawks topped the Dalhousie Tigers 80-58 in their home opener on Saturday night from The Field House.  The win was the Sea-Hawks first of the season and improves their record to 1-2 on the season.  The loss was the Tigers first of the season, which drops their record to 2-1.

Memorial started the game struggling from the field, getting great looks early but finding difficulty converting.  Dalhousie started strong taking an early lead, but Memorial quickly got back on track by pushing the tempo and taking advantage of the Tigers in transition. The Sea-Hawks would end the first quarter with an 18-11 lead.

Memorial was able to keep the momentum going in the second quarter and extended their lead to 20 points going into the half.  Lindsay Taylor was perfect from the 3-point line in the quarter (4/4), finishing with 12 points.

Despite strong shooting in the third, the Tigers struggled to maintain any consistent offense. Roberta Charles had a strong performance leading her team with a double-double (16 points, 13 rebounds on 6/16 shooting).

The Sea-Hawks had a great second half performance, which was propelled by Brook Wright's 9 third quarter points. Memorial also received solid contributions from Sydney Stewart (17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists on 6/13 shooting), Lindsay Taylor (12 points, on 4/7 shooting from three-point range) and Hallie Nickerson (15 points off the bench, on 6/15 shooting).

Nickerson also earned herself Subway Player of the Game honours.

Memorial maintained their approach of quick transition buckets and found great success, closing out the third 65-42, and the final score, 80-58.

The Sea-Hawks and Tigers will complete the weekend series tomorrow with tip-off scheduled for 12pm. The game is also available on AUStv.ca
