Gryphon’s Comeback Falls Short, Lancers Prevail 78-72

Box Score This season's Gryphon squad has shown the ability to mount a comeback, and Saturday afternoon was no different as the Gryphon's came back from as much as 15 points down to close within four, ultimately falling short 78-72 at the W.F. Mitchell Centre.

Guelph's Dan McCarthy led all scorers with 25 points, while Kareem Malcolm added 19 for the Gryphon's.

Windsor had five players score in double figures, with Jahmal McQueen leading the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Evan Matthews and Enrico Diloreto each added 15 points, while Josh Collins and Lien Phillip added 14 and 11 points respectively. Windsor utilized their superior size to attack the basket, and shot an impressive 53% from the field.

Windsor opened the game with a 12-3 run, taking advantage of their size to bully the Gryphon's down low and force Guelph into tough shot attempts. McCarthy was the only Gryphon able to create his own shot, scoring 10 of the Gryphon's 15 first quarter points. Guelph trailed 17-15 after one after closing out the quarter on a 13-5 run.

Both teams continued trading baskets in the second quarter, with Guelph's Zach Angus getting in on the action and scoring five in the quarter. Windsor's McQueen was instrumental in extending the Lancers lead to 32-27 at the half by pouring in seven points to finish with 12 at the half. Windsor held a strong advantage in shooting percentage, hitting 56% compared to 28% by Guelph, yet Guelph was able to hold tough by knocking down 12 of 14 free-throw attempts.

The Lancers continued to add to their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Gryphons 27-20 in the quarter. Diloreto and Collins paced the Lancers with eight and seven each in the quarter, while Guelph's McCarthy and Malcolm responded with five and seven points, respectively. Guelph trailed 59-47 heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, Guelph was able to cut into the Lancers lead by attacking the basket and getting Windsor into foul trouble. Guelph cut a 15 point fourth quarter deficit to just six points with 2 minutes left, and once Diloreto fouled out for Windsor, Malcolm's layup cut the lead to four with just over a minute left. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Gryphon's would get, as the length of the Windsor defenders was too much to overcome down the stretch.

The Gryphon's will hope to have better luck when they hit the road to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks Wednesday, February 8th. Tipoff is scheduled for 8pm.
