Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women's hockey team curse against the UOIT Ridgebacks is finally over thanks to a brilliant deke in the sixth round of the shootout by Alex Rodriguez (Toronto). The third-year defenceman went from her left to her right before shoving the puck over a sprawling Tori Campbell to win the game 3-2.
BOXSCORE
The victory improves the Rams' record to 1-1-1-2 this season. With seven points through their first five games, they currently sit in a tie for ninth place in the OUA standings with the Windsor Lancers. The Ridgebacks, on the other hand, fall to 2-0-2-2 and into a tie for seventh in the province with the Western Mustangs.
The victory was a bit of revenge for Ryerson after UOIT beat them twice last season, once in a shootout and once in double overtime.
Rodriguez may have been the hero, but it was Ailish Forfar (Sharon, Ont.) that got the Rams to extra time late in the third period. With the goaltender pulled and an extra attacker on the ice, Forfar one timed a pass from Justine Johnson (Burnaby, B.C.) between the legs of Campbell to tie things up at two with only 43 seconds left on the clock.
Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.) scored the Rams other goal in the first period. Her beautiful tip off a Stephanie Chiste (Schomberg, Ont.) point shot midway through the frame tied things at one after Sam Forchielli put a shot between the pipes six minutes into the game for the Ridgebacks.
Following a scoreless second, Forchielli recorded her second tally of the afternoon on the powerplay 12:20 into the third period. UOIT held the resulting 2-1 advantage until Forfar knotted things up later in the period.
Ryerson's Sydney Authier (Wallaceburg, Ont.) made 21 saves for the victory between the pipes while Campbell stopped 28 of 30 shots at the other end of the ice.
The Rams will look to take the momentum from the big win into next weekend. They host the Lancers (2-0-3-1) on Mattamy Home Ice Friday night at 7:15 p.m before facing off against the Mustangs (2-1-3-0) Saturday afternoon.
NOTES: Johnson's assist on the game-tying goal was her first point as a Ryerson Ram… Forfar's goal extends her point streak to five straight games. On top of that, she scored in the second round of the shootout with a hard wrist shot into the top left corner. The fourth-year forward has four goals and five points this season… Green's goal, her third of the season, bumps her point total to six. That puts her into the team lead and a seven way tie for fourth in the province.
