CIS No. 4 ranked Axemen post 4-0 win in season opener

HALIFAX, N.S. - The CIS No. 4 ranked Acadia Axemen claimed their first win of the regular season with a 4-0 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers at the Halifax Forum in the season opening game.

Both teams traded penalties in the first with Acadia capitalizing early. Third-year forward Brett Thompson got his first of the season on the power play, with Mike Cazzola and Travis Gibbons getting the assists.

The Tigers gave up another powerplay goal midway through the first period. Second-year forward Scott Trask got his first tally of the year with Remy Giftopoulos & Dylan Anderson getting the assists.

The Axemen game out flying after the first intermission and notched their third power play goal of the game in the first five minutes of the second period. Thompson scored his second of the game on passes from Daniel Poliziano & Liam Heelis.

With just under a minute of play in third, third-year Mike Cazzola scored the Axemen's fourth and final goal of the game. Brett Thompson got the assist.

First-year Tigers goaltender Corbin Boes made 48 saves in his regular season debut with the Tigers, while Axeman Brandon Glover recorded a shut-out in his starting role, stopping 22 shots.

Brett Thompson led the Axemen with three points.The line of Cazzola, Heelis and Thompson produced three of the four goal game.

Head coach Darren Burns pointed out that despite the score, the Tigers are much improved. "It was a very tough physical game and we had a good solid road game. We need to now turn our focus to next week', noted Burns. "Dalhousie is a vastly improved team they are well coached and they work very hard. It was a hard battle to the end"

The Axemen return home next weekend to host UPEI on Friday night and then St. Thomas on Saturday, all part of Homecoming Weekend.
