UOIT lets one slip away against Laurentian

OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team would want to press the reset button on today's result as the Laurentian Voyageurs escaped the Campus Ice Centre with a 3-2 win over the Ridgebacks.

This was only UOIT's second home loss of the season, with their last one coming on Oct. 27 (vs. Nipissing, 2-1 OT).

UOIT came into the afternoon on a three-game win streak while the Voyageurs dropped 13 of their last 14 games but a hat-trick by Peterborough native Dylan Fitze was enough to give Laurentian their sixth win.

The Ridgebacks held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes with goals coming off a tip-in by Loren Ulett (Port Perry, Ont.) and a point shot by Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.). Jesse Baird (Brampton, Ont.) picked up an assist on Ulett's power play goal. Tucker White (Holden, Mass.) and Josh Carrick (Stouffville, Ont.) earned assists on Yuill's fourth goal of the year.

It seemed as if the Ridgebacks had the game in hand but Laurentian took control of the third period, catching UOIT sitting back on their lead. Fitze beat Tyson Teichmann (Belleville, Ont.) at the 9:45 minute mark to tie it and scored the game-winner with just 2:23 to go.

Jacob Smith of Sudbury earned two assists on the night.

UOIT pressed for the game-tying goal and had a glorious chance off the draw with 1.9 seconds left on the clock but goaltender Mackenzie Savard ended up with a 27 save performance in his second win of the year.

Teichmann, making his return from an illness last week that forced him out of the game against RMC after one period, ended up with 30 saves in the loss.

For just the fifth time this season, Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) was held off the scoresheet.

UOIT (13-8-1) remains in fifth place in the OUA eastern conference, two points back of the Carleton Ravens (13-5-3) and two up on the Ottawa Gee-Gees (11-7-3).

The Ridgebacks will head to North Bay on Friday night to take on the Nipissing Lakers (8-12-2), who they shutout 3-0 on Saturday.

As part of the Bell Let's Talk campaign, the Ridgebacks are hosting Make Some Noise for Mental Health night on Saturday, Jan. 27. Fans are encouraged to bring pots and pans to "make some noise for mental health" and support the Bell Let's Talk movement in raising awareness about mental health. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Ice Centre against the Concordia Stingers.
