Axemen defeat injury-ridden Tigers 3-0

It may not have been a playoff game, but it sure looked like one today as the Acadia Axemen and the Dalhousie Tigers faced off at 3:15pm today at Wickwire Field. The Tigers had been hit by the injury bug, with both co-captains Tyler Lewars and Mark Hagen out with injury, along with other regular starters.

The Axemen came out on top 3-0 in absolute war between two of the top teams in the AUS. It was a chippy, sometimes dirty game that featured a total of five yellow cards.

It was a scary moment in the 12th minute when Tigers keeper Jason Ross misfired on a kick which connected directly with Matthew Berrigan's face, sending him to the ground immediately, though he would be alright and would finish out the game.

They would play to a scoreless draw as they entered halftime locked at 0-0.

Just minutes into the second half, Axemen Cooper Coates fired a ball into the back of the net to give the Axemen a 1-0 lead.

Tempers began to flair and warnings were issued to both teams as the physical play ramped up and both teams were fighting tooth and nail for possession. Several players were sent to the ground after vicious tackles and Tigers Zach Mbolekwa and Ryan Lewars, and Axemen Corey Cadeau were all issued yellow cards in separate events.

Cameron McGill and Jeremie Shabani would add insurance goals for the Axemen, who would hold onto the lead as they went on to win 3-0. The Axemen improve to 2-0 on the season and have yet to surrender a goal.

The Axemen will look to continue their winning ways when they head to Moncton on September 13. The Tigers head to face their cross-town rivals the Saint Mary's Huskies on the 13th as they try to get over .500.
