Deguire and Daoust duo deadly as Concordia conquered for 10th consecutive confrontation in women's hockey

MONTREAL -- Rookie goaltender Tricia Deguire made 29 saves and veteran sniper Melodie Daoust scored the game-winner as No. 6-ranked McGill doubled Concordia 2-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

It marked the Martlets' 10th consecutive win over the Stingers and improved their rivalry record to 76-38-3 in 117 lifetime meetings.

The visiting Stingers had a 30-24 advantage in shots but were stymied time and time again by Deguire, a 5-foot-7 physical education freshman from of Sherbrooke, Que., who earned her second win in as many league starts. She owns a lofty .962 save percentage after the first weekend of league play, good for fifth-best in the country.

McGill rookie Sidonie Chard of Kingston, Ont., opened the scoring just 2:54 into the game with her second of the season. Then it was Daoust's turn to do some damage. The physical education senior and team captain from Valleyfield, Que., made it 2-0 at 5:41 of the second, assisted by Marie-Philip Lavoie of Pohenegamook, Que.

Marie-Joelle Allard replied for the Stingers on a power play at 9:47 of the third but Concordia failed to engineer a complete comeback.

Stingers netminder Katherine Purchase turned away 22 pucks in a losing effort.

The Martlets were 0-for-7 on the power play, while Concordia went 1-for-6.

McGill (2-0-0) next visits Ottawa (1-0-1) on Oct. 29. The Stingers (1-2-0) take on Montreal (1-2-0) on Oct. 30.
