UOIT earn big three points in North Bay

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Battling for a position in the OUA playoffs, the UOIT Ridgebacks men's soccer team claimed a vital three points with a 3-1 road victory over the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday afternoon.

First-year striker Isaiah Briones-Skeete (Pickering, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 40th minute, lifting the Ridgebacks to a 1-0 lead at the break.

Just four minutes into the second half, Ryan Roy evened the match 1-1 for the Lakers.

However, UOIT would not be denied the victory with captain Mateo Marques (Burlington, Ont.) recording the game winner in the 60th minute, followed by an insurance marker from fifth-year veteran George Meditskos (Toronto, Ont.) in the 66th.

Ridgebacks keepers Nicholas Miller (Oshawa, Ont.) started the contest making four saves in the opening half before being relieved by Owen Hughes (Toronto, Ont.) in the second, making two saves.

The victory proves pivotal as it allows the Ridgebacks to leap back into the sixth and final playoff position in the OUA east, just one point ahead of the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Both teams have four games remaining in their schedule, but UOIT will be in tough with contests versus three of the top four teams in the division, beginning with the first place Ryerson Rams on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Vaso's Field. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
