Stingers shut door, end 57-game skid against top-ranked Martlet pucksters

Box Score
MONTREAL — An early power-play goal by left-winger Audrey Morand of Montreal, stood up as Concordia hung on and stunned No.1-ranked McGill 1-0 in RSEQ women's hockey on "Score With School" day, a rare morning tilt at McConnell Arena, Friday.

The loss snapped McGill's 57-game overall win streak against the Stingers, dating back to a 2-1 road loss at Concordia on Feb. 5, 2006. It also marked Concordia's first conquest at McConnell Arena in a decade, since a 3-1 decision, Nov. 21, 2004, to snap their 30-game losing streak on McGill ice. The Martlets are now 68-37-3 in 108 lifetime meetings against their cross-town rivals since the CIS formally adopted women's hockey in 1997-98.

McGill outshot the Stingers 27-15, including a 14-3 margin in the first frame but Concordia goaltender Briar Bache, a 5-foot-8 junior from Barrie, Ont., was rock solid with a 27-save shutout, improving to 2-1.

Morand scored at the 5:36 mark, only two seconds after a hooking penalty was assessed to Emily Davies, which brought the faceoff back into the McGill zone.  Alyssa Sherrard, a fifth-year centre from Bathurst, N.B., won the draw and Morand jumped on the puck on the right edge of the left faceoff circle and fired a one-timer just inside the far right post, past surprised McGill goaltender Taylor Hough, who registered 14 saves in the contest and took her second career loss in nine regular seasons decisions since joining the Martlets two years ago.

VIDEO OF THE GOAL

"I didn't think that we had everybody going," said Martlets head coach Peter Smith, who indicated that he sensed, right off the bat, that his troops lacked their usual amount of energy. "I don't care who you're playing, you have to get out there and respect your opponent's abilities and be ready to go. I didn't think, at puck drop, we were particularly ready to go. We didn't have enough players — I thought we had a lot of passengers in the game today."

The Martlets had a glorious chance to tie it up in the dying seconds with the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker. Pamela Psihogios, a third-year forward, found herself alone with the puck in the slot but her shot missed the net by inches.

"In all fairness, I thought Concordia played very well," added Smith, who refused to make excuses about a depleted lineup. "They got good goaltending and they worked very hard, certainly at times they outworked us. We had our scoring chances and couldn't put the puck in the net, so it's not like we didn't have opportunities."

The McGill women couldn't capitalize on any of their power-play chances, going 0-for-3, while the Stingers were 1-for-4. Conceding the early goal with a man-advantage only served to worsen their mindset as the Martlets took more penalties than their opponents, not a common occurence for the top-ranked team in the nation. Joining Emily Davies in the sin-bin was blueliner Kelsie Moffatt, along with all-star forwards Katia Clement-Heydra and Leslie Oles.

"They know they can do better and they will do better," said Smith. "There's no excuses. We get out there and we need to play hard every game and I didn't think we played hard enough in this game."

Concordia, which improved to 2-1-1, will play at Carleton (1-3-0) on Saturday at 2 p.m., while the Martlets (3-1-0) will follow them into the nation's capital and play the Ravens on Sunday at 2 p.m.
