MHKY | Gee-Gees Edge Out Voyageurs at the Wire
The Laurentian Mens Hockey team played this Saturday November 11th against the Ottawa Gee-Gees in hopes to extend their win streak to four games.
Clearly this was a huge game for Laurentian as with a win streak at stake they had to break a Gee-Gee team that had only lost one game this season and it was in a shootout.
The Vees offence had a set of legs under them early in the game as Nicolas Dionne and his offensive partner Richard Therrian were on the game sheet early as per usual. Dionne was the first to light the goal light in tonights game just eight minutes in.
Ottawa did not take long to answer the Vees with not one but two goals as Jacob Hanlon and Brendan Jacome would be given the goals and make the game a score of 2-1 for the 'garnet and gray'.
The Vees did not take kindly to Ottawas offensive push as they scored two more goals just two minutes apart in answer back to the Gee-Gees. Zack Wilkie would be score the first of two goals and as well the first of his OUA goals as the defence men was left open in front of the net for Jacob Smith to feed. The second of the goals was scored by Xavier Couture with the help of Danny Lepage and Gavin Apperson with only a minute-thirty left in the first.
The first period would end in a 3-2 Voyageurs advantage.
In a reoccurring theme of the night, the Vees would be the first to score in the second period as Gavin Apperson would score a unassisted short side bar-down goal both giving the Vees some early energy and a two goal lead.
But Ottawa would hold the offensive reins for the second period as they scored two more goals in the second period and one of them being the equalizer. Michael Poirier would score the power play goal that would bring the Gee-Gees just one away and Medric Mercier would score the goal that would tie the game with just one second left in the second.
A very exciting third period would ensure and just as both previous periods the Vees would strike first as Jacob Smith would pot the go-ahead goal with the help of a reoccurring Richard Therrian and Nicolas Dionne.
Ottawa only took four minutes to once again bring this game to a tie as Cody Drover would beat Michael Gigouvaz bringing this game once again to a tie.
It was looking like overtime for this ten goal game as both goalies were showing acts of dominance, Michael Gigouvaz would have 40 saves on the night but a late Vees penalty would give a very successful Gee-Gee power play an opportunity at netting the game winner.
In which they did as Kevin Domingue would be given the final power play goal of the night with just one minute-seventeen seconds to go in the final period the Gees-Gees would pull ahead for a win.
The Voyaguers win streak would be ruined but not forgotten as they look to take their new found success into future games as they play Queen's and RMC November 16th and 17th.
