Axewomen earn 2-1 win over Sea-Hawks to advance to Sunday's championship final

(SYDNEY, N.S.) - The No. 3-seeded Acadia Axewomen downed the No. 2 Memorial Sea-Hawks 2-1 Friday in the second semi-final matchup of the Subway AUS Women's Soccer Championship at CBU Field.

The first half featured some excellent back and forth will lots of shots for both teams.

League MVP Jesse Noseworthy (St. John'sN.L.) opened the scoring for Memorial in the 17th minute, assisted by Hannah Rivkin (St. John's, N.L.). The Sea-Hawks entered the half with a 1-0 lead.

Memorial tried to protect the lead and played defensively the rest of the way.

Acadia kept the pressure on and eventually Nicole Wambolt (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) broke through in the 88th minute to tie the game and send the second semifinal of the night to extra time.

The Axewomen got another goal quickly in extra time, again by Wambolt who scored just three minutes in.

Acadia defended the rest of the way and forced Memorial wide as much as they could. They managed to guard the lead for the remainder of extra time to secure the win.

The Axewomen will now face off against the StFX X-Women in Sunday's championship final at 2 p.m. at CBU Field.

The game will be broadcast live on Bell Aliant Fibe TV, channels 1 and 401, and available via webcast at www.AUStv.ca.

Acadia is also the host of the national women's soccer championship next weekend in Wolfville, N.S. Both they and StFX will have a berth in the national championship.
