Tommies Skate to 5-2 Win Over Aigles Bleues

The St. Thomas University Tommies skated to a 5-2 win over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in AUS women's hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

With the win, the Tommies improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Aigles Bleues drop to 2-3.

"The girls played well," Tommies head coach Peter Murphy said after the game. "We still have some work to do on special teams, but five-on-five I thought we were very good. We're pleased with the win."

The Tommies came out firing, putting Aigles Bleues netminder Gabrielle Forget to the test early. She stood tall between the pipes and turned away all 13 shots she faced in the frame.

The Aigles Bleues, who generated only six shots on goal, hit the score sheet at 19:17 when Chantal Beauchamp beat STU goaltender Abby Clarke off a slap shot from the blue line.

A penalty late in the first period put the Aigles Bleues on the power play to start the second, but they couldn't capitalize.

After killing the penalty, the Tommies exploded for three goals in three minutes.

At 6:22, Becky Conner slipped the puck past Forget to put to Tommies on the board and tie the game 1-1. Lauren Legault followed suit 38 seconds later, giving the Tommies their first lead of the game.

"They're doing well," Murphy said of Conner and Legault. "They're just hard on pucks and are a good second-effort line."

Following the second goal, the Aigles Bleues pulled Forget in favour of second-year goaltender Sabrina Lebrun.

The Tommies added their final goal of the period at 9:22 when Conner potted her second of the game, finishing a great feed from Kaylee Vader in the slot.

The Aigles Bleues opened the third with a power play goal from Marie-Pier Corriveau, cutting the Tommies lead to 3-2.

The Tommies reclaimed their two-goal advantage on the power play at 7:42 when Danielle Ring tipped a shot from the point past Lebrun.

Woods added an insurance marker with 1:37 to go, giving the Tommies a 5-2 win.

Clarke earned the win in goal with 29 saves, while Lebrun took the loss for the Aigles Bleues.

"She did well in the power plays," Murphy said of Clarke's performance. "I thought we did a pretty good job of letting her see most things and there were a few shots from the slot that I thought were good saves. Right now we're playing win and you're in, so she'll be starting tomorrow."

Lauren Legault was named the Subway Player of the Game, while Clarke and Conner were named the game's second and third star, respectively.

The Tommies are back in action Sunday when they host the UPEI Panthers. Game time is 2:00 pm. The Aigles Bleues will travel to Sackville to take on the Mount Allison Mounties. Puck drop is at 3:30 pm.
