OTTAWA --
Tawnya Guindon of Clarence Creek, Ont., scored twice as Carleton doubled sixth-ranked McGill 4-2 in RSEQ women's hockey at the CU Ice House on Friday.
It marked just the third time Carleton has ever toppled the mighty Martlets in 90 lifetime confrontations, and the first since a 1-0 decision on Nov. 13, 2015. McGill holds a dominant 86-3-1 overall record in head-to-head matchups with the Ravens.
The Ravens, who were outshot 14-2 in the first period, roared back to outshoot McGill 31-28 in the contest. The Martlets, who looked lethargic over the last two periods, were missing All-Canadian sniper
Melodie Daoust, currently playing for Canada at the Four Nations Cup tournament in Finland.
Guindon, a 5-foot-6 forward, put Carleton ahead 2-1 at 9:47 of the second period, and added an insurance goal at 10:48 of the third to make it 4-2.
Other scorers for Carleton were
Leah Scott of Ottawa, who netted the first of the game just 5:35 in, and teammate
Jennifer Semkowski of London, Ont., whose goal proved to be the winner and gave them a 3-1 lead at 18:03 of the middle frame.
"The first period was probably our best since the season-opener against Montreal," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "But then we fell behind by a couple of goals and got away from the game plan. We made some mistakes and didn't do a good job of handling the details, both in our own end and in the neutral zone."
Freshman
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., was responsible for both Martlets goals, which she scored on power plays at 13:42 of the opening stanza and 19:39 of the second.
Ravens netminder
Katelyn Steele of Markham, Ont., turned away 26 of 28 pucks for the win. Rookie McGill goalie
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., took the loss allowing four goals, for the second straight outing, on 31 shots. It was the 16th straight start for the freshman -- including a dozen preseason games -- who has been holding the fort for injured senior
Brittany Smrke.
The Martlets were 2-for-3 on the power play and killed off both shorthanded situations.
Carleton (2-2) visits Concordia (1-3) on Sunday, when McGill (2-2) hosts Ottawa (3-0-1) at McConnell Arena in a 3 p.m. start. The first-place Gee-Gees stunned the Montreal Carabins 4-3 on Friday.
MARTLET MURMURS: McGill will host a women's all-star game on Saturday at McConnell Arena. The game, slated for a 3 p.m. puck-drop, will feature the Quebec provincial under-18 squad pitted against a collection of elite CEGEP players... Canada's national women's team will play for gold at the Four Nations Cup after a 3-2 victory over the United States in Friday's final preliminary game... Canada finished the preliminary round with a perfect 3-0-0 record and will face the U.S. in Saturday's gold-medal game for the 19th time in the tournament's history... Daust didn't score in this game but does have one goal in the tourney. Full game stats and a game story are available on the Hockey Canada
