Capers top X-Women 55-40

(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - The Cape Breton University Capers (3-5) defeated the StFX X-Women (3-5) 55-40 in AUS basketball action Tuesday evening at the StFX Oland Centre.

More than 400 fans turned out for the first post-Christmas regular season game for the long-time rivals.

Rasheeka Gunn (Oakville, Ont.) led the Capers with a double-double - 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Alison Keough (Marion Bridge, N.S.) chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds.

Junior forward Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, Ont.) led the X-Women with a game-high 18 points. She added three rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Coming off injury, Kolbi Roper (North Vancouver, B.C.) contributed four points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist in only 19 minutes, while battling foul trouble.

Off the bench, first-year guard Britney Molina (El Paso, Texas) notched five points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal. 

The Capers outrebounded the X-Women 34 to 25, including an 11 to three edge on the offensive glass.

The X-Women committed 27 turnovers, while the Capers coughed up the ball 24 times.

In a low-scoring, turnover-filled opening quarter, the Capers took a 12-6 advantage.

The visitors outscored the X-Women 19 to 12 in the second quarter to take a 31-18 halftime lead.

The Subway player of the game was Jalynn Skeir (Halifax, N.S.), who contributed 10 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds for the Capers.

Lessard earned player of the game honours for the X-Women.

The Capers return to action this weekend with a pair of weekend games in St. John's versus the Memorial Sea-Hawks.

The X-Women will also hit the road, travelling to Wolfville to face the Acadia Axewomen on Saturday. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
