Dinos-Cougars Stats

by Braden Konschuh, U of Regina Sports Info

REGINA – Paul Gareau poured in a career-high 42 points to lead the University of Regina’s men’s basketball team to an 88-70 win over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Gareau was 13-for-20 from the field and 16-for-19 from the free throw line. The third-year forward’s 42 points stands as the second highest single-game total in school history, trailing only the 49 scored by Tyler Wright on Nov. 10, 2001.

Sterling Nostedt was 4-for-7 from the three-point line and ended up with 12 points, while Jeff Lukomski was 3-for-6 from downtown and scored 10.

The win improves Regina’s record to 5-4 on the season, while the Dinos fall to 4-5.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the CKHS.

Horns-Birds Stats

by Lee Dorner, UBC Sports Info Assistant

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds completed a weekend of stifling defence against the Lethbridge Pronghorns with a 98-54 win on Friday night at War Memorial Gym, extending their win streak to six games heading into the semester break.

Lethbridge's 24-point third quarter was almost as much offence as they generated in the first, second and fourth quarters combined, but it wasn't enough to get them back in the game. The T-Birds already had a 21-point lead heading into the fourth, and they held the visitors off the scoreboard for the first five and a half minutes of the final frame as they went on a 20-0 run to put the game away.

Melvyn Mayott led all players with 18 points off the bench while adding five rebounds.

Randy Davis led the 'Horns with 16 points. Derek Waldner had 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

UBC is now 10-2 on the season; Lethbridge falls to 3-9 with the loss.

Vikes-Bears Stats

by Matt Gutsch, U of Alberta Sports Info

EDMONTON - After leading for much of the game, the Alberta Golden Bears basketball team almost wound up with a loss, but battled back to win their sixth of the season, dropping the Victoria Vikes 74-68 Friday night in the Main Gym at the University of Alberta.

Canada West scoring leader Daniel Ferguson from New Westminster, BC, led all players with 23 points.  Sophomore forward Todd Bergen-Henegouwen added 17 off the bench for Alberta, and 2010 CIS all-rookie team member Jordan Baker chipped in with 13 points, and eight boards.

The Vikes got double-digit scoring from three sources as well, as Ryan MacKinnon notched 16, Mike Berg picked up 14, and Jeff Spoor added 11, but it wasn’t enough for the victory.

Alberta now owns a 6-3 conference record, while Victoria slides down to a 6-5 mark, but neither team moved in the standings, as the Bears continue to trail Saskatchewan’s 7-3 record, and fourth place in Canada West, while the 5-4 Regina Cougars haven’t caught Victoria for fifth place.

Alberta and Victoria will clash again Saturday, tipping off at 8:00 pm in the Main Gym.

#2 UBC 94 Lethbridge 58

Horns-T-Birds Stats

by Lee Dorner, UBC Sports Info Assistant

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds are still perfect on their current homestand after a 94-58 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Thursday night at War Memorial Gym.

UBC's point guard tandem of Josh Whyte and Alex Murphy sat for most of the fourth quarter with the game well in-hand for the home side at that point, but still put up impressive numbers in limited action. Whyte led all scorers with 22 points while hitting four of his five three-point attempts, and Murphy had a game-high 11 assists and three steals.

The offence was rolling for the T-Birds, who shot 48 per cent from the field, but their defensive effort was what impressed Hanson. Despite their success in the win column on their current six-game homestand, the 'Birds had been giving up a lot of points over the past few weeks, but that changed on Thursday. They held the Pronghorns to 34.4 per cent field goal shooting and forced 28 turnovers which led to 34 UBC points.

Quinn Van Gaalen led the 'Horns with 17 points, and Randy Davis chipped in 15.

The win keeps UBC on top of the Canada West standings at 9-2. The T-Birds and 'Horns (3-8) cap off the first half of the regular season schedule at War Memorial Gym on Friday at 8:00 p.m.
